The Southwestern Pirates renewed a rivalry against the Trinity Tigers (San Antonio, TX) and found out just how much ground they have to make up to be a power in the Southland Athletic Association.
The Tigers broke open a competitive game against the stubborn Pirates in the second half, demonstrating why they’re the sixth-ranked team in the country (D3football.com) with a 57-7 win on Saturday at Georgetown ISD’s Birkelbach Field.
Despite the lopsided score, the Pirates hung tough in the first half.
After Austin Vandegrift product Ryan Merrifield hauled in a pass from 5th-year senior Tucker Horn (Graham) to open the scoring, the Pirates assembled a nice drive on their second possession, only to come up empty on a missed FG.
Horn then capped off an 8-play, 80-yard drive with a 10 yard pass to Casey Hampton (Westbury Christian); Caleb Crawford (Strake Jesuit) hauled in a 40-yarder from Horn and Caleb Harmel (Burton) took a fake punt 52 yards to stake the Tigers to a 26-0 second quarter lead.
But the Pirates embarked on an 8-play, 75 yard drive of their own, capped off by Colby Bartlett’s (Godley) 3-yard plunge to pull within 26-7 – but that would be as close as Southwestern would get.
Merrifield snared a 22-yard strike from Horn; former Vandegrift QB Ryan Back tossed a 39-yarder to Ethan Boyer and a 41-yarder to Hampton; and Collin Bishop (Childress) added a 47-yard bomb to Berend Kahlden (Lago Vista) to complete the scoring.
Although Saturday’s matchup marked their first meeting as SAA foes, Southwestern and Trinity had faced each other twice a year and eight times overall as members of the SCAC since Southwestern restarted their football program in 2013. The Tigers won the first six matchups, but Southwestern took the last two, including their last previous meeting in 2016, enroute to the Pirates’ SCAC championship.
The Pirates (1-7, 1-5 SAA) have a bye this week before travelling to Jackson, MS to face Millsaps. Trinity (6-1, 5-0) hosts Millsaps Saturday in San Antonio.
In a back-and-forth battle for their district opener, the Rockport-Fulton Pirates secured their first victory of the season-- a 36-28 win over Pleasanton. Looking to battle hard through district play, the Pirates are ready to go against their opponents. Check out a gallery from their first half of the season play below:
Scoring for the Pirates in their victory over Pleasanton was Sean Howell with three touchdowns and Trevor Garcia with two touchdowns. Howell recorded 146 passing yards on 20 attempts with 96 rushing yards on 18 carries. Garcia recorded 73 rushing yards. Leading on receiving in the victory was Dawson Phillips with 55 yards on three receptions.
The team is looking toward a tough home game against the Beeville Trojans (5-1, 1-0) on Friday night. Beeville's only loss has come against a state-ranked no. 4 Cuero team two weeks ago. As the Pirates gear up, fans can expect this crew to put up a battle. Looking to add more victories to their record in district play, Rockport-Fulton will refuse to go down without a fight as they host Beeville. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
In an exciting district opener with a home-field advantage, the Beeville Trojans took on the Floresville Tigers. Amped up with determination following a BYE week, the Trojans recorded a 45-14 victory over the Tigers. Check out a photo gallery from the game below!
Leaving the Tigers scoreless through the first half, Beeville put on a show for their homecoming game. Putting up 24 points before halftime, the team showcased speed, agility, and strength against Floresville as the Trojans dominated the first half of play. In the second half, Floresville was able to score twice-- a touchdown in the third with a failed PAT and a touchdown in the fourth with a completed 2-point conversion. Beeville scored three more times (once in the third and twice in the fourth) to seal their victory and open up district play on a high note.
With a 5-1 overall record (1-0 in district play), the Trojans have showcased talent on both sides of the ball this year with talented athletes like Elijah Sustaita, brothers Darion and Davyn Perez, Seth Gutierrez, Edward Brako, Ryne Espinoza, Austin Arredondo, Joshua Arroyos, Hunter Lopez, Ryan Foster, and more. As the team carries on through district play, their toughest district opponents will quite possibly be La Vernia (4-2, 0-1) who lost 21-14 last week against Port Lavaca Calhoun and Port Lavaca Calhoun (3-3, 1-0).
Next up, the Trojans face Rockport-Fulton (1-5, 1-0) who has won only one game this season-- a 36-28 back-and-forth district-opening battle against Pleasanton last week. Fans can expect to see the Trojans fight hard on the road against the Pirates on Friday, October 13. Looking to secure another victory, the Trojans are geared up for success in district play. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
