The 2020-2021 VYPE San Antonio high school basketball season preview continues with the area's preseason all-VYPE boys basketball team. Check it out below and stay tuned for more area coverage in the coming days.

FIELD POSITION: 2026 VYPE San Antonio Football Rankings — Week 5 | Brennan Raises the Bar

The top three remain unchanged until proven otherwise, with Smithson Valley (3-0), Johnson (2-0), and Steele (2-1-1) each firing on all cylinders. Smithson Valley continued its dominant start with a 79-14 win over Manor, while Johnson returns from its bye week with LEE awaiting. For Steele, the next test comes Friday in an enticing district matchup at Pieper (2-2), which is coming off an authoritative 52-0 win over San Marcos.

Brennan (3-1) moves up to the No. 4 spot ahead of Boerne and Alamo Heights — both 4-0 and set to square off this week — but the placement isn’t meant as a slight against either 5A powerhouse. Rather, it reflects the sheer dominance the Bears have showcased in every phase during their three-game winning streak, trouncing Sotomayor, Taft, and Reagan by a combined 168-7.

Amid a weekend riddled with inclement weather, the show must go on when it comes to Texas high school football. Nowhere was that more evident than in San Antonio. With the exception of the highly anticipated clash between Steele and Lake Travis, which ended in a 28-28 tie, the majority of the games resumed after brief suspensions throughout the weekend.

Boerne came away victorious from one of the week’s more entertaining matchups, defeating Davenport, 30-21, with the Greyhounds set to close out their non-district schedule against Somerset this Friday.

From preseason omission to the top of the midseason hierarchy, Brennan has made a convincing case that it belongs among the region’s elite. The Bears have surged to 24-6 and a 4-0 start in District 29-6A, putting themselves in position to surpass last year’s Area Round finish.

Reagan isn’t far behind, and the Rattlers’ 20-10 mark may not tell the whole story. A schedule loaded with high-quality wins against opponents from across the state — including several San Antonio teams on this list — has given Reagan plenty of proof-of-concept heading into the heart of district play.
