As the UIL State Tournament kicks off, plenty of teams are fighting for their chance to hoist the championship trophy at the end of the weekend. As the UIL Class 5A girls gear up to play their respective state semifinal matchups, VYPE DFW takes a look at the two DFW-area teams that have made a name for themselves this season and are still in the running toward the championship!

<p><strong>Thursday, April 13 at 9:30 a.m.</strong><br></p><p>The Lady Mustangs had a little bit of a rocky start to the season as they dropped their first two preseason games. Posting a rollercoaster record through preseason play, the team was able to learn a lot about the strengths while also taking the time to focus on any weaknesses that they could overcome. </p><p>By the time district play hit the team was ready to take on their opponents without looking back. Posting victories over Colleyville Heritage, Denton Ryan, Lake Dallas, Argyle, Birdville, and more, the team posted 12 shut-out victories during regular season play. So far this season, the team has held their opponents to a combined 23 goals while scoring 102 of their own. </p><p>Through playoffs, Grapevine has ended the seasons of Joshua (4-0), Justin Northwest (6-2), Midlothian (3-2 in overtime play), Abilene (3-1), and Wichita Falls Rider (4-0). Led by Samantha Lumpkin, Theresa McCullough, Rowan Truman, Emma Johnson, Cecila Cerone, Addison Williams, and more, the team can be expected to put up a fight as they enter the state tournament. </p><p>The team is expecting a tough matchup against undefeated Smithson Valley. They will have to remain focused and maintain control of the game from early on against this squad, but it's not impossible. Fans can expect the Lady Mustangs to do everything it takes to make it to the championship game.</p>
