It’s no surprise that Tomball has carried its momentum into the postseason. While a pristine 36-0-1 record suggests overwhelming control, the Cougars haven’t simply cruised past the competition.
That reality was on full display in last week’s Area Round series against Oak Ridge High School, where Tomball secured the sweep but was pushed in both contests (4-2, 7-2). Each game demanded depth, composure, and the ability to win a battle of attrition — traits that continue to define this run.
Senior CJ Sampson’s aura-filled strut — capped by a gesture urging the crowd to bring the noise after stranding multiple Oak Ridge runners in scoring position late in Game 2 — felt like a snapshot of Tomball’s season. Injuries, adversity, and outside doubt haven’t shaken this group; Cougar Nation remains unfazed, aware of its potential without tipping into overconfidence.
Go all-access with Tomball Baseball, featuring insights from CJ Sampson, Catcher Hopkins, and head coach Doug Rush as the ultimate goal comes into focus.
2028 College Park defensive lineman RJ Wyms has been one of the fastest rising recruits not only in the Greater-Houston Area but across the country.
Wyms was recently ranked by 247Sports as the number 35 overall recruit in the class of 2028, the number six defensive lineman in the country and the number four player in the state of Texas.
"It's been amazing. A lot of time, energy and training went into this so it's really been a blessing," Wyms said on his recruitment and recent rise to national recruit. "I was really shocked when I saw the ranking, I had also hoped to be recognized as one of those top guys so it was a big thing to see that ranking."
Wyms comes from a football family as his father Eilis Wyms was a star at Mississippi State before going onto the NFL and winning a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Having his father to help guide him throughout all aspects of the game has meant a lot to Wyms.
"My dad tells me a lot about the game and we're able to breakdown a lot of football knowledge as a whole so I'm able to understand the game a lot more," he said. "Even with the coaching change for us this off-season a lot of guys were freaking out at first but talking with my dad he told me that's just how the game is and that a lot of times that's just how the game is so having him has really helped me focus on the main goal."
Wyms currently holds 17 division one offers from the likes of Michigan, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Wisconsin, LSU and Houston to name a few.
The four-star defensive lineman will continue to pick up offers throughout the rest of the off-season and mentioned he plans on making a few visits this summer to schools like Texas, Tennessee, Texas Tech, LSU, Duke and Georgia Tech.
With his junior year approaching, Wyms is looking to fine tune his technique this summer as well to have a big season next fall.
"I'm trying to play more three-technique this year as well as bouncing to the outside as well so a lot of working on playing with my hands more this year," Wyms said. "Playing defensive tackle their are a lot of skillsets I'm going to have to sharpen up this off-season before the season starts."
Wyms looks to be the next big-time defensive line prospect to come out of H-Town and watch out for him and the Cavs next fall as they have aspirations of another deep playoff run in 2026.
