The playoff race in District 25-6A has heated up fast with intrigue up and down the standings. Vandegrift and a resurgent Hutto are off to quick starts. But behind them comes a whole pack of teams either occupying the mushy middle or trying to climb back into the melee. Cedar Ridge is part of the first group; Stony Point falls into the latter category as they prepare to meet Friday night (10/3) in the VYPE Central Texas Game of the Week from the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex.
Both Round Rock ISD rivals enter play at 2-3 overall but Cedar Ridge is in a better spot in the district race. The Raiders (1-2, 2-3), under first-year Head Coach Bryan Vardeman, enter play a game behind Vista Ridge, Round Rock and McNeil for the final playoff berth. Cedar Ridge has averaged 36.4 points-per-game thus far with much of it coming courtesy of senior running back Noah Devonish (76-594, 7.8 YPC, 6 TD). Junior quarterback Dylan Snoga (50-85, 689 Yds, 5 TD, 2 INT plus 4 rushing TDs) has provided the Raiders with enough passing offense to keep defenses honest. Seniors Christian Hall and Jake McGill, along with Devonish, have been his favorite targets thus far.
The Raiders have struggled on defense, however, allowing 44.4 points per game, albeit against some fairly potent offenses.
Still, that provides an opportunity for Stony Point. The Tigers (2-3, 0-3), under the dean of 25-6A head coaches Craig Chessher, have struggled in district play after a 2-0 start to the season. Those struggles, however, have come against the likes of quality opponents Vandegrift, Vista Ridge and McNeil and the Tigers hung in tough against the Vipers and the Rangers.
Still, with so many teams in front of them, this is all but an elimination game for Stony Point. They’ll rely on their two-quarterback rotation of seniors Mason Troyer (58-95, 944 Yds, 4 TD) and Kinnick Kalbus (20-36, 298 Yds., TD, 2 INT), along with junior running back Marcus Milligan (70-336, 4.8 YPC, 6 TD), to put points on the board and keep pace with the Raiders.
Stony Point’s defense has allowed 29 points per game, so this game could easily turn into a track meet unless one of these defenses steps up.
Post-season positioning and perhaps even playoff survival will be on the line when Stony Point hosts Cedar Ridge in a battle of Round Rock ISD rivals in this week’s VYPE Central Texas Game of the Week.
