VYPE Austin Central Texas Game of the Week Recap: Dripping Springs denies Bowie upset bid
The Bowie Bulldogs raced out to a fast 14-0 lead over Lake Travis last week before the Cavs came back for a big win. Bowie flipped the script this past Friday night (10/10) as the Dawgs spotted Dripping Springs that same 14-point edge before fighting back to take the lead. The game ultimately came down to some 4th-quarter defensive heroics that allowed Dripping Springs to escape with a key 28-21 District 26-6A win Friday night in our VYPE Austin Central Texas Game of the Week.
Junior quarterback Chase Ames connected on a 7-yard scoring strike to sophomore wide receiver Dodge Reid, followed by an 11-yarder to senior receiver Merrik Bloomgren on the Tigers’ first two possessions to grab that 14-0 lead. But two Tiger special team miscues let Bowie back in the game.
First came a mishandled punt return that the Bulldogs recovered on the Drip 19-yard line. Senior quarterback Christian Heywood connected with junior running back Rhys Moreno to cash in from 4-yards out early in the second quarter. After the Dawgs recovered a second muffed punt on the Tiger 28-yardline, Moreno plunged into the end zone from 1-yard out to tie the game at 14-14 heading into the half.
Moreno’s second touchdown run from 5-yards out capped off a 58-yard third quarter drive that gave Bowie their first lead of the night at 21-14. But the Tigers fought back with a scoring run of their own.
Junior running back Lawrence Attaway capped off a 56-yard drive with a 1-yard dive to tie the game at 21-all late in the third quarter. Following a defensive stop, the Tigers took the lead for good on Ames’ 4-yard scamper. But it took a 4th and 1 stop on Drip’s 34-yard line by the Dripping Springs defense – their second 4th down stop of the quarter -- to preserve the Tiger win.
After surviving Bowie’s upset bid, Dripping Springs (3-0, 7-0) will take their undefeated record into their showdown with undefeated Lake Travis on Friday (10/17). Bowie (1-2, 4-3) will try to regroup against powerful Westlake on Friday. VYPE will broadcast that game from Burger Stadium.
