Not sure about you folks, but we can’t wait for district play to begin for everybody. While the non-district matchups thus far have been stellar, it’s tough to compare and contrast teams when they’re playing far-flung opponents from across the state. Last week did see a few districts begin play with more to follow this week and the rest next week.
But back to those intriguing non-district matchups and their effect on this week’s Power Rankings.
We’ll start at the top, which is once again becoming top-heavy with 6A powers. Lake Travis fought powerful Cibolo Steele to a draw before Mother Nature forced their game to be suspended. Weiss, meanwhile, bounced back from their loss to the Cavs to dispatch Glenn. Then it gets interesting.
Westlake dropped a home game to undefeated Prosper. Vandegrift crushed a good Liberty Hill team on the road to reset their season. Round Rock stunned Dripping Springs in a possible playoff preview. So how to sort all that out?
We’re leaving Westlake at #3 – for now – and will see how they fare against their new district mates after a Bye Week. Vandy’s quality road win rebounds the Vipers to #4 ahead of their matchup this week with #5 Round Rock. What a way to close out the non-district!
Drip settles at #6, ahead of Anderson who will likely start climbing again with their Bye complete. Hutto stays at #8 but the Hippos are prime candidates to move up with as many points as they score. Resurgent Cedar Park cracks the Top 10 at #9 after a good road win in Waco while Bowie channeled their Week 2 frustration into a rout of Converse Judson to round out the Top 10.
Cedar Ridge and Rouse both posted lopsided wins and climbed to the cusp of the Top 10 at #11 and #12, respectively. Bastrop fell hard after being shut out by Belton while Liberty Hill and Hays both slipped back as well after losses.
Wimberley moved up to #16 to become the highest-rated 4A squad, ahead of four newcomers to the rankings: undefeated Lockhart and Taylor, followed by PfISD rivals Pflugerville and Hendrickson.
On the Private School side, top-ranked St. Michael’s narrowly averted an upset at #3 Hyde Park while second-ranked Regents walloped Antonian to get back on track after a rare loss last week at Kinkaid. Brentwood Christian whacked TLFA to leapfrog St. Andrew’s, although the Hilltoppers continue to make strides in the SPC as a full varsity program again.
With temperatures now “only” in the 90s, it’s on to Week 4!
