There was nothing at stake Friday night (9/12) when 6A heavyweights Westlake and Atascocita clashed at Humble’s George Turner Stadium. It was just another non-district game between two programs used to playing after Thanksgiving. It didn’t mean a thing.
Yeah, right.
While technically true, both the Chaparrals and the Eagles played this game like the potential playoff preview it could be, with the visiting Chaps coming away with a 35-28 win.
Atascocita’s senior running back CJ Toney started the fireworks early with a 70-yard touchdown run on the game’s second play from scrimmage.
Westlake bounced back when Rees Wise connected with Chase Brodhead for a 22-yard touchdown strike. Wise struck again midway through the second quarter, this time on a 35-yarder to Rhett Jenkins to put Westlake up 14-7
Less than two minutes later, however, the Eagles tied the game again when junior quarterback Isaiah Rasheed, filling in for Arizona State commit Cardae Mack, found Brian Manuel for a 33-yard score.
Westlake sophomore running back Jarren Lopez capped off a 9-play, 83-yard drive with a 2-yard plunge to put the Chaps back on top at 21-14, only to see Rasheed answer for the Eagles from 22 yards out to send the see-sawing squads into the locker room tied 21-all at the half.
With Rasheed shaken up and Atascocita briefly down to their 3rd string quarterback, Toney took over and took it to the house from 61 yards out to give Atascocita their last lead of the night early in the third quarter. After the Eagles defense picked off Wise on the next drive, Westlake’s defense stopped Atascocita on 4th down in Chaps territory. Westlake’s Braden Riddell capped off the game tying drive with a 15-yard run to send the teams into the fourth quarter knotted at 28-28.
From here, Westlake’s defense again saved the day. The Chaparral’s recovered a fumble at their own 10 yard-line to thwart the Eagles’ potential go-ahead score. Wise next capped off a long drive with a 7-yard run for the game-winning score – though it took a Westlake sack to stop the next drive and a Chaps fumble recovery on the final drive to seal the win for the visitors.
Atascocita (2-1) travels to King to open district play after their bye week; Westlake (2-1) faces yet another potential playoff opponent in powerful Cibolo Steele Friday night (9/19).

Alief Hastings' Xavier Obiero-Hyter
Jamey Wright (VYPE)
There's no flashy stat line for an offensive lineman. No highlight reel moment that captures the relentless footwork, the hand placement, the snap-to-whistle discipline. But for Hastings senior Xavier Obiero-Hyter, that quiet grind is exactly where he thrives.
Now entering his final season with the Bears, Obiero-Hyter stands as one of the program’s most reliable and respected leaders—earning first-team, all-district honors in 2024 and announcing his commitment to continue his career at Army-West Point this past June. His impact isn’t always loud, but it’s foundational.
The Bears finished 3–7 last season, just outside the playoff picture, in what was head coach Michael Carter’s first year at the helm. With a new district and new expectations, growing pains were inevitable—but Obiero-Hyter sees promise in how the team has responded.

“Sure, we had some ups and downs last year,” he said. “But that’s to be expected in a new district and with a new coach. So, it’s going to be really important that everyone buys into the culture that Coach Carter has brought, and drive home that belief. We have the skill, so all that’s needed for us to reach that next point is to get that next win.”
That veteran insight didn’t come easy. As a freshman and sophomore, Obiero-Hyter was thrown into the starting lineup following an injury on the offensive line—an early challenge that forced him to learn on the fly and sharpen his game quickly.
“Because of that, I feel that I’ve become more well-rounded and knowledgeable as a player up to this point,” he said.
A versatile interior lineman who can play either guard or center, Obiero-Hyter approaches his role with intention and self-discipline. He patterns his game after NFL All-Pro Tristan Wirfs (Tampa Bay), known for his technique, strength, and professionalism—traits Obiero-Hyter strives to emulate every time he steps on the field.
His journey into football wasn’t always clear-cut. Like many kids, he tried different sports before zeroing in on the one that sparked a deeper ambition.
Jamey Wright (VYPE)
“I began to really invest myself because I noticed that this could take me somewhere,” he said. “I’d go to workouts by myself, and work drills with trainers—anything that could help turn that dream into reality.”
At the heart of that drive is family.
“My Mom, my Dad, and my family as a whole— even though we didn’t have much, they’ve always been there and supported me through everything. Their impact on my life has helped lead me towards a scholarship, and I hope to return the favor someday.”
For Hastings to push into playoff contention in 2025, it’ll take buy-in, execution—and the kind of steady leadership Obiero-Hyter has subtly built his name on.

Fort Bend Austin's Tinsley Welker
Bradley C. Collier (VYPE)
In a sport where precision and timing make all the difference, few players combine those qualities with the quiet confidence of Tinsley Welker.
Though still a junior, Welker has quietly become a cornerstone of Fort Bend Austin’s volleyball program, proving that leadership isn’t always loud but always effective.
Last season, Welker’s impact was undeniable. Named the District 21-6A Setter of the Year as a sophomore, she averaged an impressive 8.6 assists per set, totaling 1,150 assists over the course of the year. But her contributions don’t end there— with 400 digs, 238 kills, 61 aces, and 35 blocks, she demonstrates a versatility rare for any player, let alone one so young.
Welker’s development extends beyond the high school gym. Competing with the Houston Skyline 16 Royal club team, she faces some of the region’s best talent, sharpening the skills that make her one of the area’s most efficient and dependable setters.
Austin closed out the 2024 season with a strong 29-16 record and a second-place finish in District 21-6A.

Although the Bulldogs faced a tough opening-round loss to Manvel in the playoffs, the experience has only fueled their determination heading into the new year.
As the 2025 campaign continues, a fair portion of the attention will fall on Welker to lead the Bulldogs’ offense and build on their success. While she has yet to announce a college commitment, her impressive résumé makes it clear that recruitment interest will intensify in the coming months.
When it comes to this game, much of the overall rhythm flows through the setter — and with Tinsley Welker orchestrating the play, Fort Bend Austin’s season promises to be one worth watching.
