VYPE U: How Covid-19 Has Impacted Houston Spring Sports

The Coronavirus has impacted people across the city of Houston and in local communities for many weeks now. Local schools are closed at least until May 4th with many people believing that the school year will be cancelled for many Houstonians. For athletes, their seasons are on hold until further notice.

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) has suspended all activities across the state of Texas until further notice. This order also states that sports teams cannot hold practices and workouts together.

Spring sports affected by this notice include baseball, golf, powerlifting, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and water polo. For baseball and softball teams, their seasons had only lasted about one month when it was suspended. Meanwhile, soccer teams were approaching the end of their regular season. The track and field and golf teams were preparing for Regional and State competitions in May.

Athletes across the city of Houston are disappointed about their season potentially being cut short, especially seniors. Even though seasons are suspended for now, it does not mean that they are cancelled for good. Many coaches have designed workouts for athletes to complete at home in order to stay in shape and ready for if their seasons are continued.

For now, athletes must be optimistic and remember it is better to be safe than to endanger others.
