THE PROSPECTUS

Sealy Tigers

This is clearly Sealy's district to lose and that may be a big challenge for the other six teams. The Tigers, who finished 12-1 a year ago and went unbeaten through District 13-4A-D1, return five starters on offense and seven on defense. The headliner is reigning district Defensive MVP Garret Redden (187 tackles) at linebacker. DB Matthew Lord, DB Reece Novicke, OLB Hunter Clark and C Jacob Evanicky were also all-district selections. They will have to also overcome the losses of some heavy hitters, replacing departed QB Garret Zaskoda (district leader with 1,966 yards passing and 25 TDs) and RB Ivan Bolden (1,564 regular season yards). "We are going to have to stay healthy," coach Shane Mobley said. "We have a strong senior class that will have to be great leaders. Some of the youth that will be stepping up to fill roles will be a key." Sealy's offense ranked second last year, averaging 384.3 yards per game, which was just behind Needville. At this point there is no reason to think Mobley won't improve on his 18-6 record he's built his first two years at the school.

West Columbia Roughnecks

This could be a bounce-back year where the West Columbia Roughnecks return to the postseason. The Roughnecks went 6-4 and 3-3 in district, but should see a big uptick in the win columns as they return 10 starters on offense and nine on defense. Luke Arias (603 yards rushing, five TDs) is the reigning District Utility Player of the Year and OL Branden Ballard, DL Mark Booze, OLB Garrett Irwin and DB Sultan Abdullahare back following stellar 2018 campaigns. Cameron Ward returns for his senior season after ranking fifth in the district amongst the quarterbacks. Ward passed for 1,136 yards and eight scores. Head coach Brent Mascheck cites "mental toughness" and a need to "eliminate turnovers" to really make a big leap into the Class 4A elite.

Needville Blue Jays

With a bi-district playoff win and a 7-5 season to build on, the Blue Jays of Needville are expecting more in2019. They have seven starters on both offense and defense back, so a playoff spot should be in the bag. RB Ashton Strednick will be the best offensive player around after leading the district in rushing, busting loose for 1,581 yards and 28 touchdowns in the regular season alone. Strednick averaged an impressive 9.03 yards per carry and by the time the playoffs were done had rushed for nearly 2,000 yards. The Blue Jays will have to find an answer at quarterback as Kenny Hrncic is gone to graduation after passing for more than 1,500 yards. Expect Trevor Baker to step into that role. Kole Matula will lead the defensive unit after recording 120 tackles a year ago. If Needville makes the playoffs, it will be the second-straight appearance.

Brazosport Exporters

There is some buzz coming out of Brazosport as the Exporters bring back six offensive and five defensive starters from a 5-6 team that was knocked out in the first round. The Exporters look to make the playoffs for a third-straight season, which would mark the first back-to-back-to-back playoff appearance for the program since doing in from 1999-2001. First-team, all-state safety Kevin Davis and RB/LB Daraell Preston are the Exporters' two biggest weapons. Preston is coming off a year where he rushed for 690 yards and seven scores in the regular season. Wide receiver Eddie Flores (238 yards receiving) and DE/LB CJ Calhoun will also contribute. Returning quarterback Brendan Brimage is back after passing for 926 yards and 11 TDs as a junior. New head coach Mark Kanipes comes over from Santa Fe where he improved from a 1-9 record in his first two years to a playoff berth last year.

Bay City Black Cats

With more than half of its starters back from a 4-6, 3-3 team, the Bay City Black Cats should have every right to feel positive about its playoff chances. Running back Rodney Mitchell will pace the offense, which averaged a third-best 351.9 yards per game last year. Mitchell rushed for 671 yards and had 284 yards receiving in the regular season. Other notable players include DB Marcus Edwards, WR Carlos Lara (291 yards receiving), DL Heart Gaskin and LB Abel Mendoza. That grouping should give second-year head coach Pat Matthews plenty of reasons to believe he could have a playoff-bound team this year.

Fulshear Chargers

Fulshear is a group that should start ticking upward in2019. Even though they went winless in district play during a 2-8 campaign, that may not carry as much weight with this new edition. The Chargers return five starters on offense, which averaged 337.7 yards per game (fourth best in district play). Quarterback Jackson Edge could make some noise this season. Watch out for the running game as well as T.J. Fields (317 yards) and Tosin Ogunlana (312 yards) could provide a nice one-two punch out of the backfield. At receiver, Jonathan Davidson had 33 catches last season for 516 yards, which was the second most in the district. He was a first-down creating machine. Another player to watch on offense is guard Cedric Dickerson. Safety Truman Bexley and CB Ty Kingsberry will patrol the secondary, which should be the team's defensive strength.

El Campo Ricebirds

El Campo stumbled to a 3-7 season with only one district win in 2018. The return of 10 starters can only help with a hoped-for turnaround. Running back Charles Shorter had a breakout season as a sophomore in2018. Shorter finished third in the district with 1,054 yards and 18 touchdowns. The incoming junior was also one to watch on kick returns as he had six for 131 yards. The Ricebirds will have to find a replacement at quarterback as Lynn Osina graduated. Defensive end Cade DuBronc can make the defense stiffen up along with linebacker Clay Jung.
