Cibolo Steele Knights (2025 UIL 6A-D1 State Semifinalists)
Few areas in Texas enter this winter with as much proven postseason pedigree as San Antonio.
Last year’s playoff surge — highlighted by multiple extensive runs across 6A, 5A, and even 4A — underscored how seasoned and competitive the local field has become. And with many of those same cores returning, expectations remain appropriately high.
Steele sets the early tone after breaking through for its first UIL Final Four appearance since 2016, a milestone that reestablished the program among the state’s elite.
The same can be said for 5A powerhouse Wagner, which not only returned to the State Tournament for the sixth time since 2008, but also made its long-awaited debut in the title game.
Judson, coming off a pristine 36-2 campaign, enters with a clear sense of urgency to push past last year’s third-round exit. Another thing the San Antonio area can confidently point to is a strong slate of Regional Finalists — Brennan (6A-D1), San Marcos (6A-D2), Pieper (5A-D1), and Davenport (4A-D1).
Rounding out the mix are several battle-tested 6A squads — including Johnson, Sotomayor, and O’Connor — each capable of shaping the season’s trajectory.
If the previous campaign hinted at anything, it’s that this region’s blend of depth, experience, and upward-trending programs should once again make it one of the state’s most intriguing battlegrounds.

THE HIERARCHY: VYPE SATX Final 2025 Football Rankings; Region's elite primed to make noise in postseason
10 Nov, 2025
As district play closes and the playoff lights switch on, the field of true contenders has come into focus.
At the top of Class 6A, Steele once again looks the part of a title threat, finishing 9-1 behind a commanding district run. Harlan joins them as one of the region’s few unbeatens, while Brennan and Johnson round out a formidable quartet that’s set the tone for large-school football all fall.
In 5A-Division I, Smithson Valley continues to lead the charge after a dominant district sweep. The race behind them in 13-5A-D1, however, was among the state’s most unpredictable, with New Braunfels, Boerne-Champion, and Pieper all posting 5-2 marks and critical wins over one another.
Boerne and Alamo Heights headline the 5A-DII group as proven challengers, while Davenport enters the 4A playoffs unbeaten and unshaken.
Now, as the brackets settle and the margins tighten, every snap carries consequence — and only those built for November will keep playing in December.
