Lake Creek's Ava Brown

Coach Michelle Rochinski and her team of premier athletes decided to make a statement when they faced Frisco Heritage this morning--REPEAT OR BUST.
The opening game of the UIL-5A State Tournament at McCombs Field did not disappoint.
Both Lake Creek and Frisco Heritage initially experienced difficulties when attempting to get their base-runners across home plate--primarily due to the exceptional pitching and defense both sides have come to expect.
However, that all changed in the bottom of the fourth inning, when LSU-signee Maddie McKee (Sr. SS) sparked the Lions offense with an RBI-triple to bring home senior outfielder Jolie Bazan. Shortly after Madalyn Davis (Fr. 2B) and Payton Bauer (Sr. DH/OF) would run home off of two separate errors committed by Frisco Heritage.
With the score now 3-0, Lake Creek didn't have much trouble scoring after that.
Inning No. 5 saw the Lions score five runs to distance themselves from the Coyotes.
Florida-signee Ava Brown (Sr. RHP) began the score-fest with an RBI-double, followed by an RBI-double by freshman phenom Madalyn Davis, a two-RBI double by UTSA-signee Kalee Rochinski (Sr. C), and an RBI-single by senior OF Shelby Winn to make the score 8-0.
Brown would go on to add another run in the ensuing inning, via a sac-fly, which would ultimately seal Lake Creek's return to the UIL State Title game, which will be played tomorrow at 1 pm.
The reigning champs are just one game away from sealing their repeat. Stay tuned.

In the bottom of the seventh inning of the Class 6A Regional Finals, Pearland was down 5-8 against Deer Park.
With their hopes of reaching the State Tourney hanging in the balance, pinch-hitter Gabbie Roundtree (Sr. OF) came in the clutch with a 3-run homer to tie the game. Soon after, the Lady Oilers would emerge victorious by a score of 9-8 to punch their ticket to Austin.

Friendswood’s Brandon Schirck had a remarkable showing throughout his team’s Spring campaign. The junior Mustang further evidenced this by taking gold in the Shot Put at the UIL Regional Meet, followed by a second-place finish (59-09.75) at the State Meet. With another year left in his career, expect him to improve upon those stats in 2024.
Albert Archundia, Friendswood Track & Field
Similarly to Schirck, senior Albert Archundia led another outstanding year on Friendswood’s Track & Field team. After finishing second at Regionals, Archundia took bronze at State in the Shot Put event (58-10.00), to cap off an exceptional high school career.
Kristyn Whitlock, Pearland Softball

Pearland’s senior infielder Kristyn Whitlock played an instrumental role in the Lady Oilers’ victory in the Region III Final. The SHSU-signee had a solo homer in the contest, on top of three RBIs--one of which was the walk-off sac-fly to send her team to the State Semifinals. Whitlock will undoubtedly be a key figure in Pearland’s push for a title this weekend.
Friendswood Girls Golf

After winning yet another district championship, the Mustangs Girls Golf team would go on to place third at Regionals--earning them a spot in the UIL State Tournament at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown. Friendswood ultimately finished ninth-overall against some tough competition, with a composite score of 674, which has set the standard for the young program.

After last week’s Regional Semifinals offered fans a series of comebacks and statement wins, four of the eight remaining teams in the Class 6A race are from the Houston area.
The two prime-time matchups slotted this week--Cy Woods v. The Woodlands in Region II, and Pearland v. Katy in Region III--are sure to keep audiences out of their seats.
Here is a look at the H-Town powerhouses aiming to punch their ticket to Austin for the State Tournament.

Cy Woods has shown time and time again that they can bounce back from any defeat.
Case in point, they dropped the opener against Rockwall Heath, only to answer with a definitive 7-0 victory in Game No. 2.
Subsequently, the heavy hitters on the Wildcats lineup--senior OF Sam Myers (2-4, R, RBI), senior SS Tristan Russell (1-4, R, 2 RBI), senior 3B Ethan Farris (1-4, 2 R, RBI), and junior 1B McClane Helton (1-3, RBI)--helped to seal the deal in the 8-4 series clincher.
If the Cy Woods batters keep clicking the way they have, they will be a tough team to keep down for long.
Similarly, The Woodlands narrowly fell in game one against Rockwall (7-8), and responded with a dominant combined no-hitter thrown by senior LHP Brayden Sharp and sophomore Caleb Holifield to take the second.
Senior 3B Carson Kimball, Jake Escovedo (Sr. OF), Kyle Hubert (Jr. OF/P), Jack Johnson (Sr. IF), and the aforementioned Sharp were among the TWHS batters who stepped up throughout the series.
After falling to Rockwall in the Regional Semis a year ago, the Highlanders flipped the script on the Yellowjackets, winning the clincher 3-0 to advance to Round No. 5.
With a trip to the State Tournament on the line, you'd better believe that fans will be flocking to witness the spectacle of these two contenders facing off.

Both Pearland and Katy are coming off consecutive hard-fought wins to advance to Round No. 5.
The Oilers bullpen and defense played at the top of their game, as Nico Partida (So. RHP) and junior right-hander Jake Mader-Cooper combined for a no-hitter in their 3-0 victory in the opener.
Game No. 2 saw junior LHP Jaden Barfield come in to save the day, as he played a key role in getting Pearland out of not one, but two bases-loaded jams with some help by Pearland's fielding.
Furthermore, SHSU-signee Brett Smajstrla (Sr. OF) and Texas A&M-signee Caden Ferraro (Sr. 1B/P) anchored the Oilers lineup on the batting side.
Katy, on the other hand, shared the wealth at the plate.
Andrew Hilton (Sr. OF/P), Reese Ruderman (Sr. C/IF), Cole Kaase (Sr. IF/P), Josh Dunayczan (Sr. IF/P), and senior IF Graham Laxton each contributed an RBI through their two-game sweep over Clear Springs--with Laxton, in particular, sealing the series with a walk-off RBI-double in game two.
The Tigers bullpen isn't to be underestimated either. Seniors Caleb Koger and Lucas Moore have been proven to be effective starters, while the likes of Kaase or sophomore pitcher Cade Nelson can seal a victory at the relief spot.
Neither team in this matchup has yet to lose a game throughout the playoffs, which will inevitably change in the coming series at Constellation Field in Sugar Land.
The Region III crown is up for grabs. Stay tuned to see who takes it.
