The Texas high school football season gets closer and closer to the postseason. Week 8 of UIL football and Week 9 for the private schools helped bring some district playoff photos into clearer view.
Here’s a look at five storylines that stood out during the week of games played Oct. 15-17.
District 3-6A
Arlington James Martin High School is sitting in first place in District 3-6A play.
At 7-0 overall and 4-0 in district games, the Warriors are closely followed by Weatherford and Aledo, both at 3-1. However, the Warriors have already beaten both of those teams.
Chase Devoll threw three touchdowns, and Javian Jones-Priest accounted for five touchdowns in a 45-20 win over Bowie.
Six of the eight teams in the district are still in the playoff hunt for one of the four berths — with a logjam of 2-2 teams in Arlington, Arlington Mirabeau B. Lamar, and Arlington James Bowie with 2-2 marks. Martin will face Lamar this week in a rivalry showdown that Lamar won last year.
The Warriors will close out facing Arlington and Granbury.
Anna standing alone
Looking ahead a little bit, the Anna vs. Celina showdown on Oct. 30 looked as though it could be a battle of unbeatens.
The winner would claim the District 4-5A Division II title.
Frisco knocked off No. 10-ranked Celina, 33-20, on Friday to force a tie with the Bobcats at 3-1 in district play.
The Raccoons, at one point, held a 19-point lead over Celina. However, Frisco lost to Anna earlier this season, so the Raccoons would need help to share the district title.
The No. 6-ranked Coyotes will face Denison, Celina and Prosper Richland.
Another upset
Perhaps the most shocking result in 6A football this past week was Lake Highland beating No. 9-ranked Coppell, 27-19.
The Wildcats were down 10-0 and later trailed 16-7, but rallied behind two touchdowns from John Cothern. The first was a touchdown run by the quarterback to give his team a 20-19 lead. Then, he had a touchdown pass to Conrad Ince.
Ince had three catches for 14 yards, but scored twice.
Lake Highland, part of Richardson ISD, is now in first place in District 7-6A with a 4-0 mark. Coppell and Plano East are now tied for second at 3-1.
Plano West, Richardson Berkner and Plano are all part of a tie for 4th with 2-2 district marks.
Backup coaches at Cedar Hill
Cedar Hill head coach Nichols Ward was placed on leave on Oct. 9 and news came out before the Longhorns’ game against Mansfield Legacy on Friday.
According to WFAA, Ward is under investigation for something, but what exactly was not reported by the television station.
Coaches Brice Musgrove and Chason Virgil shared co-head coaching duties in a 39-23 win over Mansfield Legacy.
The win moves Cedar Hill to 2-2 in District 8-5A Division I play. They are part of a tie for third place with three other teams for the final playoff berth with Burleson Centennial, Midlothian, Mansfield Summit and the Longhorns.
Defending state champion DeSoto is atop the district standings with a 4-0 mark.
Rose Strong
This weekend also came the news that Fort Worth Chisholm Trail quarterback Keaton Rose is battling leukemia.
The senior threw for 905 yards and 7 touchdowns and ran for another school record in 4 games this year. Gabriel Webster has been the starting quarterback since Rose’s exit.
A GoFundMe has been created to help his family and a T-shirt sale is also underway.
Chisholm Trail, part of Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD, is 4-3 overall and 2-1 in District 3-5A Division I. Denton Ryan is leading with a 4-0 mark, with Denton, Azle and Chisholm Trail with two wins and right now sitting in one of the four playoff spots.

GRAPEVINE — Fort Worth All Saints Episcopal leaned on the steady production of Brayden Boults and Jaytn Briles to pick up another win.
The Saints marched onto Trident 1 Field and beat Grapevine Faith, 45-7, Friday night in a TAPPS Division II District 1 game.
Boults, a newcomer from Sumter, South Carolina, had another 3-TD game for the Saints. Briles had his second straight game of two touchdown catches for All Saints.
Sophomore quarterback Bodie Brown tossed a pair of scores in his second game at QB1, filling in for an injured starter Brailon Davis.
“He's a sophomore, but he's a stud, man,” Briles said. “We started clicking in practice as soon as B-Money (Brailon Davis) as soon as he went out. We had full confidence in (Bodie) to come out and he's been doing great.”

The Saints got points from the offense and special teams in the first quarter, taking a 24-0 lead.
Jet Thomas had a 23-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown, with 6-foot-5 Hudson Harbuck getting his hand on the punt.
Carver Johnston booted a field goal and Boults scored two touchdowns.
It was the sixth time this season he scored at least two touchdowns in a game for the Saints.
The sophomore who moved in from Sumter, South Carolina, has offers from Georgia, Texas Tech, Florida and SMU, to name a few. His 48-yard touchdown run on the Saints’ sixth offensive play started the scoring barrage early in the first half.
His next score, from 9 yards away, made it 24-0 late in the first quarter. He lined up at quarterback late in the second quarter and took it in from 5 yards out to account for the final touchdown for the Saints.
“He's pretty quick, pretty shifty,” Thomas said of his teammate. “he's good. You know, iron sharpening iron. Making sure they're better every day. it's always good to have somebody on the other side of the ball like that.”
The game had a running clock in the third and fourth quarters thanks to the 35-point-plus lead the Saints had at halftime.
Grapevine Faith (3-5, 1-1) broke up the shutout in the fourth quarter. With about 10 minutes to go, backup quarterback Moses Smeltzer connected with Cason Parker for a 27-yard score. The Lions got down to the All Saints' 1-yard line on the final drive, but came up short on scoring again.
Fort Worth All Saints will host Midland Christian on Friday. The winner will be the district champion.

Denton Ryan won its 5th straight game, 52-0 over Keller Fossil Ridge, on Thursday at the Keller ISD Athletic Complex.
The Raiders improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in District 3-5A Division I action. Denton Ryan is in the driver’s seat to win the first district title in four years. Only games against Azle and Fort Worth Chisholm Trail stand in the way.
However, the Raiders are the only team in 3-5AD1 without a district loss.
“What we've been focusing on is not so much what we do, it's how we do it and executing at a high level,” said first-year coach Shane Tolleson. “We’ve got a long way to go, though. This team is talented, but we're still not at the level that I think we need to be to take this team to places that this program has been before. And that's the goal here. That's the standard. It's high here. And we're here to raise the bar. And we’ve got a long way to go in that aspect to meet that goal.”
Tolleson was previously an assistant coach at Denton Ryan before becoming head coach at Waxahachie. He left Waxahachie after last season to return to Denton Ryan to replace Dave Henigan.
He was part of 7 straight district titles when he was an assistant and the level to be among the best programs in the state is still there.

The defense got the team going with a 30-yard pick-6 by Arkansas pledge John Catlin IV. That was on the second play for Fossil Ridge.
That was the foreshadowing of a dominating performance. The first shutout of the season included giving up only 3 first downs and Fossil Ridge had only 42 yards of total offense.
Denton Ryan posted two shutouts last week — against Granbury in the regular season and then versus Abilene in the postseason.
The offense got 3 touchdowns from R’mani Benjamin. The transfer quarterback from Waxahachie threw for 143 yards and touchdown passes to Connelly Cunningham and Brylon Moody. Benjamin also ran 5 times for 92 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown on the first offensive play after the Ryan defense got a turnover.
Sophomore Malik Henderson ran 7 times for 26 yards and scored twice for the Raiders.

Denton Ryan led 38-0 at halftime and had the ball only twice in the second half due to the running clock.
