Can Anyone Stop the Argyle Machine?
Over the course of the last 10 years, Argyle has, without a doubt, an unstoppable force in the Metroplex - at that's pretty much across all sports. In that 10 years (2009-2018), the football team has lost a grand total of 12 games, averaged 13.2 wins and 1.2 losses and made four state final appearances, capturing the crown in 2013.
Last year's team lost to eventual state champ Waco La Vega in the Regional Finals, so a 2019 team with 34 lettermen returning is most assuredly primed to get back if not ready to make a deeper run. Quarterback Bo Hogeboom, who threw for 3,366 yards and 44 touchdowns last year and is committed to Houston on a baseball scholarship, is back to lead an offense that averaged 50 points a game last year including scoring more than 60 points in five of those contests.
Until it actually happens, it's hard to see that juggernaut being dethroned, which takes us to next tier of teams in the district: Celina, Paris and Melissa.
All are expected to make the playoffs again, but where they could finish largely up in the air. Celina struggled early last year and went .500 in district play - good for the fourth playoff spot - but found a groove once in the playoffs, make it three rounds deep only to lose to Argyle. If Bill Elliott's team can find that same groove early in the year and ride running back Logan Point, the Bobcats could be trouble come playoff time.
Like Celina, Paris brings back 12 starters for the 2019 campaign and are looking to break past the third round of the playoffs.
Melissa also has 12 starters returning - six on each side - including three-star senior quarterback Brendon Lewis, who ranks as the 14th best dual-threat quarterback in the country. If Lewis can do what he did last year - 3,109 yards passing, 1,009 yards rushing and 50 total touchdowns - or better, he could put Melissa in position to make a lot of noise in district and in the playoffs.
