VYPE ATX/SATX Team of the Week: Davenport Athletics

Welcome back to another ATX/SATX edition of Team of the Week. Each week we take a look at a team from across the San Antonio/Austin area and surrounding areas that impressed us for one reason or another.

I am going to cheat a little this week. While this is supposed to be contained to 1 team when I started to think of who I wanted to pick this week Davenport came to mind. When I started looking at both the Football and Volleyball teams it became clear just how good these 2 squads have been to start the season.

First let's start with the Volleyball team. Currently sitting at 26-4, after their sweep of Canyon Lake yesterday, Davenport looks poised to build on their first round playoff exit last season. Through 4 district games they have only dropped 1 set and look to continue that dominant district performance in the second half of the season. Talan Dodson (3.7 kills per set), Logan Strong (4.2 digs per set, 42 aces and 307 digs) and Lexi Dahl (43 aces, 322 assists and 157 digs) have been great for the Wolves helping lead them to this point this season. One of their key games coming up will be next week when they take on one of the best teams in the nation in Cornerstone Christian. A win their could go a long way for this team in hopes of a long playoff push.

Then there is the Davenport football team. In their first year of UIL play they currently sit at 4-0 with wins over Victoria West, Kerrville Tivy, Pieper and Lockhart. Part of that reason has to be because of the play of Running Back Shastin Golden. Golden is averaging 213.8 yards a game on the ground and sits at 13 touchdowns on the year including 7 last week! To compliment Golden is Triston Hamlin. He is averaging 254 yards through the air completing 64% of his passes with 9 touchdowns of his own. Then on the defensive side you have Zahir Livingston, Judge Erickson and CJ Tanner leading the defense and their bend but don't break squad. Their biggest test to date will come after their bye-week when they take on their last non-district opponent Devine.

It's always uncertain how things will finish up. Davenport Volleyball and Football have lofty goals for sure, but one thing is for certain, at least this week Davenport Athletics has come to play in their 3rd year of playing high school sports.
