FAT BOY'S PIZZA Player of the Month: Travis ace, Gholson dead-set on playoff return

Travis Baseball is in the heat of playoff contention as the regular season nears its end.

Currently in the No. 3 spot of a competitive district (5-4 record) that features perennial powerhouse Ridge Point, the Tigers are looking like postseason qualifiers.

Leading the way is senior RHP/INF Maguire Gholson, who has been essential to Travis’ success.

“We compete every game and like most teams we’ll occasionally make mistakes,” said Gholson. “But, we always do everything we can to come out on top. My expectations for us are to compete through every pitch and stay locked in as we try to win out the remaining schedule.”

The Tigers’ ace has been a standout on the mound through district play, throwing for a remarkable 0.97 ERA in 15 innings pitched. Gholson, along with junior RHP Devin Cummings, have been dynamic assets in the bullpen.

“Our other top pitcher, Devin, is the reason I try to stay so consistent for Travis,” Gholson said. “We both learn a lot from each other and just try to go out there and be the best we can be for our team.”

Furthermore, Gholson’s performance has earned him the opportunity to play college ball at Ranger College.

“One of my buddies reached out to me about Ranger College and then I was contacted by the coaches. I went on a visit and knew that coaching staff could develop my game,” he said. “After meeting them and seeing the program, I knew that’s where I needed to be.”

So, what inspires Gholson to stay on the diamond?

“My future is what inspires me to keep working,” said Gholson. “Because, I know if I put in the time to become a better pitcher it will all pay off in the end.”

With only a few weeks left in the regular season, Gholson aims to lead Travis to the postseason in his swan-song season.

“I want our team to compete and get to the playoffs,” he said. “In addition, I intend to compete every time I step on the mound and give my team a chance to win.”
