2021 VYPE Awards: Private School Softball Player of the Year Finalists

VYPE
Jun 25, 2021

It is awards season here at VYPE!

We welcome you to the Countdown to the 2021 VYPE Awards presented by Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. Over the next two weeks, we will be unveiling the finalists for the player of the year awards. Team and Coach of the Year awards will be announced LIVE during the Fourth Annual VYPE Awards.

The winners will be honored in a one-hour virtual show on Sunday, June 27 at 6 p.m. on VYPE Houston's website, Twitter account and on the VYPE Texas Facebook page and YouTube Channel! It will be an event to get dressed up for and to tune in to as it will be an evening full of special moments!

Let us get it started! Here are the finalists for Private School Softball Player of the Year!

PLAYER OF THE YEAR FINALIST: Emily Dear, St. Pius X

For St. Pius X, it all started with UTSA-signee Emily Dear. The UTSA-signee has done it all for the Panthers in 2021 from the circle to at the plate.

Dear was the ace of the staff, posting a 15-5 record with nine complete games, five no-hitters, four perfect games with 144 strikeouts in 114 2/3 innings. She has also hit .634 at the dish with 11 home runs, seven triples, six doubles and drove in 42 runs.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR FINALIST: Avery Hodge, Fort Bend Christian Academy

For the first time, the Class of 2021, FBCA can call themselves District Champions.

This past spring, FBCA posted an undefeated mark in district play and entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed.

The Eagles were paced by Oklahoma-commit Avery Hodge, who was the unanimous District MVP. Hodge hit .778 with 25 RBIs and 25 runs scored in district. She also posted a 0.73 ERA in 19 innings.

She was a first-team, all-state and all-district pick.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR FINALIST: Rachel Riley, Second Baptist School

The Second Baptist School won the TAPPS state title in softball and leading the way was Penn-signee Rachel Riley. She posted a 15-5 record with 151 strikeouts and just 25 walks, and a 2.21 ERA in 110 innings. At the plate, she hit .530 for the season with 23 RBIs. Riley threw a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts on senior night back in March in a 10-0 win over St. Joseph School.

THE RANKINGS: VYPE's Private School Softball Top 5

Matt Malatesta
28 Feb, 2025

No. 1 - St. Agnes Academy Tigers

The champs are ready to defend their title in 2025. St. Agnes Academy went 26-8 overall and won the TAPPS Division I Championship, defeating Antonian College Prep in the title game. Priscilla Riser enters her fifth season (86-44) leading the Tigers and returns seven starters off the State Title team, including Princeton-commit Mia Valenzuela, who hit .515 last year with 11 doubles, five triples, three homers, and 29 RBIs. Valenzuela was also first-team, all-state and the TAPPS Division I State Tournament MVP. Washington University-commit Julia Sullo will roam the outfield after being a first-team, all-state selection after hitting .475 with 17 RBIs and 32 stolen bases. Other key returners include Harvard-commit Kyra Nguyen (.469, .864 slugging, 14 2B, 6 HR, 34 RBIs, 15 steals), Dartmouth-commit Ella Darby (.357, 13 2B, 2 HR, 27 RBIs), Caroline Crocker (11 starts, 60 IP, 62 Ks) and Sophia Deutschen (,372, 1 HR, 16 BB). Deutschen was named second-team, all-state a year ago and hit a homer in the State Semifinal game to send them to the title game. Other players to watch include Penelope England, Emily Paiva, Anna Morton, and Kirsten Moon. Riser’s keys to success for this season include finding consistency in the circle, reloading after losing three starters and their ace, and taking it one game at a time. “With being the defending champions, it’s easy to skip ahead to the end of the season, or add pressure on ourselves thinking we have to repeat,” Riser said. “We need to prioritize our growth as a team and individuals each week.”
