June 21, 2023—Ronald Patton, campus athletic coordinator and head football coach at Cypress Lakes High School, was named the new associate athletic director on June 21. Patton replaces Virginia Flores, who was named CFISD athletic director in May.
Patton has 23 years of experience in education, 19 of which have been in CFISD. His coaching career began in 2000 at Langham Creek High School, where he served three seasons as a secondary coach and special teams coordinator.
In 2003, he transferred to Cypress Ridge High School, serving six years in the roles of defensive secondary coach, outside linebackers coach and defensive coordinator. He was named campus athletic coordinator and head football coach at Lamar Consolidated High School in 2010, where he coached four years and led the team to two playoff appearances.
Patton was named to his current role at Cypress Lakes High School in 2014. Two of his Spartan teams were Touchdown Club of Houston Sportsmanship Award finalists in 2019 and 2021. He was named Houston Texans Coach of the Week in 2015.
Patton earned his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Development from Texas A&M University.
He served on the board of directors for the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association from 2013-2014. In 2012, he was selected to coach the Texas All-Stars in the annual Texas vs. Louisiana All-Star Game. He is also a member of the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association, American Football Coaches Association, Texas High School Coaches Association and Associate of Texas Professional Educators.
“I am honored and blessed to join a team that serves the CFISD coaches, athletes and community daily. CFISD has some of the most talented and driven athletes/ coaches in the state and I look forward to supporting them all,” Patton said. “It goes without saying that I will miss my Spartan family, the camaraderie with staff and the daily grind with the athletes, but being able to serve and support all coaches/athletes in 6th through 12th grades across the district excites me most.”

LET'S START WITH THE NAME...LOU LAMAR. THAT JUST SOUNDS LIKE A FOOTBALL NAME, RIGHT?
Well, the name fits the game.
Junior Lou Lamar is coming off a stellar season in which he earned an all-state honorable mention fo rhis efforts on Concordia Lutheran’s defense. His distinct adaptability makes him one of coach Willie Amendola’s most valuable assets on the turf.
“My best quality as a player is my versatility,” said Lamar. “I love football, and I love to play any position on the field. I’ll be happy just playing special teams if that’s where they need me. Right now, I’m playing a few different positions and I’m happy to do it. I think all our guys share that same mindset, because we’re playing for the guy next to us and we’re playing to win.”

Although he’s a mainstay in the Crusader’s secondary, Lamar has shown that he can be effective in the gaps when he cheats to the line. Not only that, but in the upcoming Fall season, expect him to make an impact on the offensive side of the ball now that he is listed as a running back as well.
This must be something that Henderson State University saw, considering they recently gave Lamar his first offer to play college football –no doubt, the first of many.
“I’m really thankful for the Henderson State coaches, and thankful to God for giving me this opportunity,” he said. “But, I’m just looking at it as motivation to grow even more and help the guys around me to do the same. We’re working hard and hopefully we can show that on the field next year.”

What’s something not everyone may know about the eventual Concordia Lutheran senior?
“I’m a bit of an introvert,” Lamar said. “I love being with my friends but I also need my alone time. There’s no place I’d rather be than chilling by myself, working out, playing music and watching movies. I’m a big movie guy, particularly the war genre or Tarantino-type stuff. My favorite has to be either Inglourious Basterds or Django Unchained.”
An excellent taste in films, no doubt.Expect Lamar to carry that love for action onto the field, as he and the Crusaders compete for a district title and more in 2023.

WHAT AN ADDITION JACE JEFFRIES WAS THIS SEASON TO THE CONCORDIA LUTHERAN HOOP TROUPE, ON AND OFF THE COURT.
The St. Thomas-transfer fit right in with teammates Jesse Fuller and Howie Keene to lead to an undefeated district season and an Area Round appearance.
The junior looks forward to playing an even bigger role in 2023-24.
“Of course, it’s going to be a big responsibility for me,” said Jeffries. “We had a pretty good season, but we know there’s more work to be done. We have a good group of guys, and I feel like as a senior I need to lead them into a winning position. So, we know our purpose in what we do, and we’ll go hard every day.”
In addition to dishing assists on the court, Jeffries spends his free time assisting the community by helping to train the younger generation of ballplayers at Alodia Basketball Academy.
“I always try to give back to the youth,” he said. “It’s always been a big part of my life, because when I was a kid I looked up to people. They look at a kid who’s teaching them the drills three times a week and I think that makes them appreciate it more. So, now I want these kids who look up tome to succeed.”
Given his palpable dedication to the game, it’s not hard to see why he’s become a standout in Concordia Lutheran hoops.

“I think my hard work and motivation helps to set me apart,” Jeffries said. “Getting up in the morning, not just for basketball – it might be for the classroom or something else. I’m always trying to better myself in my work ethic, without cutting any corners.”
It’s only a matter of time before that translates onto the hardwood in a major way.
