Austin area football teams are scoring lots of points so far this season. On the other hand, they’re also giving up a lot of points, leading to some wild games and a lot of upheaval in this week’s Power Rankings.
The top three spots remained the same despite Lake Travis’ significant stumble against a solid TAPPS opponent in Cornerstone Christian. That’s primarily because nobody else is yet positioned to take advantage. Of the two teams closest to them, Westlake had a bye and the Cavs had already dispatched Weiss earlier in the year.
Round Rock is close. One week after knocking off one powerhouse in Dripping Springs, the Dragons did it again, outlasting Vandegrift in a thriller on the road to step up next to the podium. Drip and Anderson both notched convincing wins to move up while the Vipers fell back to #7. Speaking of scoring points, Hutto, Cedar Park and Bowie lit up the scoreboards in their respective impressive victories to round out the Top 10.
Cedar Ridge and Hays also won handily to lead off the second half of the rankings -- and then it gets messy. Rouse and Liberty Hill treaded water despite losses as nearly everyone behind them also fell.
Undefeated Wimberley is the highest of the three 4A squads represented, just ahead of Taylor. Georgetown re-emerged in the Rankings at #17 with a nice rebound, a spot ahead of Lockhart who suffered their first loss of the season to powerful Anderson.
4A Lago Vista cracked the grid at #19 while Hendrickson’s narrow loss kept them clinging to the bottom of the rankings.
Regents’ dominating win over Episcopal in a TAPPS/SPC tilt combined with St. Michael’s’ rough loss vs. Lutheran South propelled the Knights back to the top of the private school rankings. Meanwhile, Hill Country Christian edged Brentwood Christian in their district showdown to rise into the rankings at #4, ahead of the Bears and behind steady-as-she-goes Hyde Park at #3.
District play is officially underway for everyone as Week #5 gets underway this week. The Power Rankings should start to firm up even further with more of those head-to-head matchups on tap.
