THE ELITE 11: VYPE ranks best DFW teams of 2019-20

While the high school season came to a drastic halt in the spring due to COVID19, there were some amazing moments prior to all of the cancellations.

VYPE went through the year that was... and came up with the Elite 11 -- teams who stole the headlines this school year. Some were on the cusp of greatness like Lancaster and Duncanville boys basketball and other were the favorites entering the postseason like Flower Mound soccer.

Here are your Elite 11.

No. 1 Aledo Football (Class 5A, DII State Champs)

Beat FB Marshall for the Bearcats ninth State Title, going 15-1.

No. 2 Duncanville Girls Basketball (Class 6A State Champs)

Knocked off DeSoto and Cy Creek to win State.

No. 3 Byron Nelson Volleyball (Class 6A State Champs)

Beat Plano West in five sets, winning first State Title in school history.

No. 4 Lancaster Boys Basketball (Class 5A State Tournament)

Reached State Final Four going 36-1. Set to face Hightower in semis.

No. 5 Lucas Lovejoy Volleyball (Class 5A State Champ)

Beat Canyon Randall in three sets, winning seventh State Title.

No. 6 Duncanville Boys Basketball (Class 6A State Tourney)

Peavy and crew were on track to defend State Title.

No. 7 Southlake Carroll Boys and Girls Cross Country (State Champs)

The Dragons swept the cross country titles. First in five years for boys; four years for girls.

No. 8 Duncanville Football (Class 6A State Runner-Up)

CULTURE CHANGE: Boyd turning corner under Coach Johnson's energy

A new culture is taking root at McKinney Boyd, and head coach Stu Johnson believes that change will be the catalyst for turning the Broncos into a contender.

After playing a number of underclassmen a season ago, Boyd enters 2026 with valuable experience and renewed confidence. The record may not have reflected it last fall, but the foundation was laid by a young roster that gained meaningful Friday night reps. Now, those players return bigger, stronger and fully invested in Johnson's vision.

Farrah Sheeren (VYPE)

Despite fielding high-level talent year after year, Cypress Ranch often ran into the same postseason roadblock—perennial powerhouse The Woodlands. That narrative shifted in 2025.

Head coach Collea McKinney and the Mustangs flipped the script, knocking off The Woodlands en route to the deepest playoff run in program history. Cy Ranch later built on that breakthrough with a win over two-time defending state champion Grand Oaks in the Region II Final, securing the program’s first-ever berth in the UIL State Tournament before closing the season at 39-9 overall.

In recent years, it has almost become expected that Grand Oaks would make extended playoff runs—a reflection of the consistency and development instilled by head coach Morgan Rogers and her staff.

This past campaign followed a familiar script, as the Grizzlies captured another undefeated district title before advancing to the Region II Final, where they fell to Cypress Ranch, narrowly missing a chance at a third consecutive UIL state championship and closing the year at 37-9.
