It's that time of year again. The summer is wrapping up and so are the summer leagues and camps. I am sure that you practiced until your body hurt everywhere. Waking up early and training until late. Some of you may have even planned summer jobs around your workouts. So what did you learn? What have you gained from open gym? What did you learn that will help you take your game to the next level?
If you didn't learn how to RECOVER, then you have a lot to learn. Recovery is the key to being a NEXT-LEVEL athlete. Here are 3 keys to recovering like a pro.
HYDRATE – Proper hydration starts long before your athletic activities do. It is important to drink at least 8 – 12 ounces of water prior about 15 – 30 min prior to workouts/competition. It is important to continue to hydrate throughout the activities. As the length and intensity of the workout increases, it is recommended to add carbohydrates and electrolytes. Drinks like Gatorade™ can provide a good source of replenishment.
NOURISH – For years, eating from each category the food pyramid was the standard for proper nutrition. The key to eating like an athlete to have a combination of meals throughout the day that have high quality carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Many athletes like to drink something as basic as milk to recover from an intense training session. It provides all three of these nutrients.
SOFT TISSUE CARE – Post-workout stretching is a great place to start. Stretching helps to release tension in the muscle tissue and decrease the buildup of lactic acid. The proper balance of exibility and muscular tension helps to prevent injuries. Other treatments like sports massages and can improve athletic performance. Remember what you do before and after you play can be as important as what you do when you are playing.
