After a week of epic district clashes and intriguing non-district matchups, the Power Rankings are a hot mess heading into the final week of the regular season.
Not at the very top, however, where Rouse handled over-matched Lehman to hang onto #1, just ahead of surging Lake Travis. The fun started when Georgetown won an extra-inning non-district tilt with Dripping Springs to climb to the bronze slot while the Tigers slipped to #4. Buda Johnson bounced back from a tough series with Clemens to sweep Cibolo Steele and hang on to the 5th spot.
Bowie and Anderson took care of business to remain at #6 and #7 respectively -- and then all heck really broke loose, primarily in the District 25-6A race. Westwood completed their sweep of Stony Point, took the weather-delayed Game 2 of their series with Round Rock and split with Vandegrift (winning Game 2 on a dramatic 2-out, 2 run single in the bottom of the 9th after falling behind in the top of the inning.) Round Rock bounced back from their G2 loss to Westwood to pound Stony Point. Cedar Ridge salvaged a split with McNeil before their Bye. Vandegrift swept Hutto and soundly defeated Westwood before the aforementioned heartbreak in Game 2. And Vista Ridge easily swept Manor but split with Hutto.
Four of these five teams are bunched within a game of each other while Cedar Ridge, at 2 games back, should cruise to two wins over winless Manor. Don’t be surprised to see those five teams finish within a game of each other and playing bonus baseball to determine who makes the playoffs. We’re bailing out and placing them all in a tie until they can sort it out on the field. Or not.
And speaking of district drama, Hays burst back into the rankings with consecutive shutouts of Liberty Hill with Weiss sandwiched in between the two. (Weiss will likely finish higher once 25-6A gets resolved.)
With just one week left in the regular season, there are huge matchups coming up everywhere. We’ll be back next week after the dust settles for one last look, but here’s how they stand for now.
