VYPE Austin Central Texas Game of the Week Recap: Cedar Ridge clutch comeback lifts Raiders over Stony Point
While most are focused on the wild scrum atop the District 25-6A standings, Cedar Ridge and Stony Point clashed in a fierce below-the-radar battle to try to stay in the playoff hunt. When the scoreboard clock reached 0:00, it was Cedar Ridge who had mounted the comeback and snatched a critical 42-38 win Friday night (10/3) in our VYPE Austin Central Texas Game of the Week.
Cedar Ridge jumped on top with a 36-yard Cooper Tougas field goal, but Stony Point quickly responded. A 72-yard heave from Tigers senior quarterback Mason Troyer to senior Tristan Rimes set up Stony at the 2-yard line before platooning senior quarterback Kinnick Kalbus punched it in the next play. The Tigers would hold that lead until the waning minutes of the game.
After Kalbus’ second plunge increased the Tiger’s margin to 14-3 early in the second quarter, Tougas trimmed the Raiders deficit to 14-6 with his second kick of the night. The teams then traded blows throughout the rest of the first half. Troyer (24-45, 363 yards, 2 TD) connected with senior Sean Bradley on a 24-yard swing pass to put Stony Point up 21-6; Raider junior quarterback Dylan Snoga answered with a 13-yard fade pass to sophomore Trent Bell to pull Cedar Ridge back within 21-13; Troyer drilled senior Oliver James on a 27-yard slant pass to boost Stony back to a 15-point lead, 28-13, at the half.
The second half was more of the same. Snoga launched an 81-yard bomb to junior Carter Copeland on a deep route, then connected with senior Jake McGill for the 2-point conversion to make it 28-21 Tigers. Later, with Cedar Ridge driving for the tie, senior Jonah Osborne picked off Snoga and the Tigers capitalized. Junior Marcus Milligan (23-143, TD) scampered in from 8 yards out to boost the Stony Pont lead to 35-21. But Cedar Ridge responded, with senior Noah Devonish taking it 13 yards around the left side to pull the Raiders back within 35-28 after three quarters.
Stony Point’s Tyler White drilled a 27-yard field goal to boost the Tiger lead to 38-28, but the rest of the fourth quarter belonged to Cedar Ridge. Devonish’s (11-100, 2 TD) second touchdown of the night came on a 48-yard dash off left tackle to make it a 3-point game. After the Raiders got the football back, Snoga (16-26, 344 Yds., 3 TD, INT) struck again, threading the needle through good coverage and under heavy pressure to find senior Christian Hall for a 32-yard scoring strike. As Stony Point mounted one last drive, the Raider defense stood firm to preserve the 42-38 comeback.
Stony Point (0-4, 2-4) will look to get their first district win of the season Friday night at winless Manor. Back in the playoff mix, Cedar Ridge (2-2, 3-3) hosts Vandegrift at Dragon Stadium. VYPE will broadcast both games with separate broadcasts for all four teams.
