The South Houston area is loaded with talented athletes who give it their all in their respective fields of play.

Welcome to the VYPE Playmakers, powered by UTMB Health, where we’re highlighting five standouts of the south Houston area. Here are the UTMB Athletes of the Week--Track & Field Edition!

Marquis Johnson, Dickinson

Bradley C. Collier (VYPE)

The cream rises to the top and Dickinson's Marquis Johnson is showing out for the Gators track and field team. The Missouri football signee is showing elite speed that will translate to the football field.

He is the current district (24-6A) leader in the 100m Dash (10.18 sec.), 200m Dash (21.37 sec.) and the Long Jump (24-4.5). It stands to reason that Johnson is only just getting started.

Kamryn McLaurin, Clear Brook

Juan De Leon (VYPE)

While Kamryn McClaurin of Clear Brook is a shining star on the basketball court for the Wolverines, the sophomore also flexes her athleticism in track and field. McClaurin is leading District 24-6A in the high-jump with a mark of 5-8. She set her personal best at the Clear Falls Knights Relays.

Marcus and Matthew Gaitan, Lutheran South Academy

Bradley Collier (VYPE)

Marcus Gaitan is one of the best long-distance runners in all of TAPPS track and field. The junior has one of the top 800 meter times in the State and is also one of the top runners in the 1600m. His twin brother Matthew also is a star in the 1600 and 3200 meters.

They will be a daunting pair as they continue to build on their high school careers.

Madison Peters, Pearland

Madison Peters is one of the best in the business in long-distance running. The junior is a beast on the oval, who has the top District 23-6A times in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meters. In the Fall, Peters won the Class 6A Region III Cross Country Championship and finished ninth overall at UIL State.

Katherine Valentine, Clear Falls

Katherine Valentine can go the distance. The super-sophomore long-distance runner is tops in District 24-6A in the 1600 and 3200 meters. She has won each of her six 1600 races this Spring and took first in all of her 800m events.
