The La Porte Bulldogs are making their move up the VYPE Class 5A Rankings, and they’re backing it up with big-time performances on the field.
La Porte has picked up impressive wins over Port Arthur Memorial and Baytown Sterling, establishing itself as a team to watch as the district race heats up. The Bulldogs are a perfect 5-0 in district play, with Beaumont United next on the schedule this weekend.
Leading the charge is explosive wide receiver Peyton Smith, who put together a monster performance in the win over Sterling. Smith hauled in eight catches for 200 yards and four touchdowns, putting on a show and earning Lone Star College Player of the Week honors.
Smith has emerged as a game-changing weapon in the Bulldogs’ passing attack, but he’s far from a one-man show. Running back Sean Simon is also enjoying a big season, giving La Porte another dangerous offensive threat for opposing defenses to contend with.
With momentum building, a perfect district record and playmakers stepping up on both sides of the offense, the Bulldogs are positioning themselves for a strong finish.
La Porte is climbing the rankings — and the Bulldogs are showing they have the firepower to keep rising.
If it wasn’t clear enough already, Seven Lakes made its statewide aspirations impossible to ignore with another victory over Tompkins last Friday.
Unlike their first meeting, which ended in a 3-0 sweep, the Spartans had to battle through five sensational sets to take down the Falcons once again. In doing so, Seven Lakes (28-10) improved to a perfect 14-0 in District 22-6A, securing the program’s first district championship since 2020.
Beyond the district crown, 2020 was also the year Seven Lakes put it all together to capture the Class 6A state championship — an intriguing parallel that adds another layer of significance to what head coach Amy Cataline’s squad is accomplishing now.
As far as talent goes, this group is as skilled as they come.
Senior Gracie Hobin continues to be brilliant from the pin, evidenced by her team-leading 439 kills and more than 250 digs.
The middle-blocking tandem of Willtrace “Wiggles” Ngoh and Nlonna Okwura might just be among the most gifted in Texas. Together, the duo has combined for nearly 500 kills and more than 200 blocks, while junior setter Ani Reyes has elevated her game considerably, dishing out 754 assists. Senior defensive specialist Emma Sabelli has been equally impressive, collecting nearly 350 digs of her own this fall.
With the playoffs beginning next week, it’s safe to say Seven Lakes has timed its hot streak to perfection.
