HOUSTON - Looking towards the 2020 season, Kate Zora envisioned her 500th career victory would come in August.
Due to COVID-19 pushing back the beginning of the season for Class 6A programs and the University Interscholastic League eliminating tournament play, that milestone would have to wait.
On Tuesday, with a 3-0 victory over Tomball - pushing Klein's overall record to 15-0 and 6-0 in district play - Zora reached No. 500.
"You don't get anywhere without great athletes that want to work hard every single day and that has attributed to the success that we've had," Zora, who has coached at FB Bush, Round Rock Westwood, A&M Consolidated and Klein in her career, said. "It's like a business, your best asset isn't what your product is but the people. We try to invest a lot of time and effort on building relationships. I think that's been a big attribute to the success."

<p>Entering this week, Klein remained No. 1 in Texas in Class 6A with a perfect record and have dropped only one set all season. Klein is followed by Pearland Dawson at No.2 and Seven Lakes at No. 5. </p><p>The Bearkats are also nationally ranked in the AVCA/USA Today poll at No. 3 in Region 4. </p><p>"This group, they're special," Zora said. "They are really focused and are really driven on what the goals are. They come in each day prepared ... "We were going to be locked in and focused on their goal. They have done that and a lot of that is leadership but at the same time when you have leaders you have to have everyone to follow. As a team we try to stay as balanced as possible." </p><p></p><p>Klein this season has been led by seniors Clemson-commit Devan Taylor (141 kills, 245 digs and Annie Antar (116 kills, 144 digs and 272 assists) but the leader in kills through 15 matches has been sophomore Ariana Brown with 157 and 29 aces. </p><p>"The amount of improvement she has been made has been amazing," Zora said about last year's District Newcomer of the Year. "She's playing with a lot of confidence and I attribute that to the amount of hard work and time she has put into her game. You don't get better because you want to, you get better because you really worked hard for it." </p><p>Defensively, Rice-commit Gaby Mansfield has led the team in digs with 253 and Camy Kling, who recently committed to University of North Alabama, has led the team in assists with 287. </p><p>For a team that's goal has been reaching the UIL State Tournament in 2020, they have had literally everything thrown at them that could be foreseen as an obstacle - global pandemic, losing a traditional offseason, no club volleyball circuit, a late start to the season. </p><p>But this group has taken it in stride and doesn't look to be slowing down. </p><p>"I attribute that to their flexibility," Zora said. "It goes back to that idea of 'Locked In'. They are just like 'we know what our goal is, we will be flexible when we need to be flexible, we understand things are going to be last minute'. We are just trying to take it one day at a time and handle everything that we have. We just try to communicate as much as possible.</p><p></p><p>"They've just kept a really level mentality where they're not really letting anything get to them, which I think is very mature of them. I think that's what makes them special. Their ability to handle pressure and handle changes." </p><p>Klein will be back on the court on Friday at home against Klein Cain and have seven regular season matches left on the slate prior to the 2020 playoffs beginning, where they will try and advance to state. </p><p>"This group of seniors has been to the Regional Tournament every single year," Zora said. "They've established a good legacy of high expectations." </p>

Huffman improved to an impressive 6-0 this past weekend with a 49-21 over Lumberton. A big piece in the win was Jacob Watson, who finished with 100 yards and two scores on seven catches. Then on the defensive side of the ball he had an interception. What a performance by him! A VYPE Helmet Sticker for him.
Trace Holmes - SweenyÂ
Sweeny rolled to a 56-13 victory over Wharton, which snapped the Bulldogs two-game skid and improved their record to 2-5 on the season. The Bulldogs' were led by Trace Holmes who finished 7 of 9 for 172 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Holmes also had one rushing score and seven tackles and an interception! What a game on both sides of the ball.

Can't you just imagine Keith Jackson's legendary Rose Bowl call of Vince Young's final touchdown against USC being played here? "He's going for the corner ... he's got it!" D'vonne Hmielewski did just that sealing an upset victory over No. 5 Bellville last weekend. Hmielewski finished an impressive 12 of 15 for 175 yards, one touchdown and an interception and then rushed for another 90 yards and two scores, including the game-winner, on 24 carries. What a game, what a win for Sealy!

The Blue Jays are coming off a 28-20 win over Stafford last week. A big key to victory was the play of running back Walker Warncke. He has been unbelievable this season. Warncke finished with 151 yards and a score on 35 carries.

In a 35-14 victory over Splendora, Livingston got major contribution from wide receiver Julian Gardner, who finished with 140 yards and two scores in just five catches. What a night for him.

In a 34-32 victory over Cypress Ridge over the weekend, Ben Moseley had a big game. Moseley finished with 135 yards and a touchdown in five catches. One of those catches was SportsCenter-worthy. Moseley got turned around and then made a one-handed catch for a 30-yard completion. On top of making a one-handed catch Moseley dragged both of his feet to make sure it was a catch. That is not an easy catch to make. He made a Division I, NFL-level grab.

With four games under his belt Keon Kennerson has put himself amongst the best in District 17-6A. With a total of 435 yards of offense, 248 rushing and 187 passing, Kennerson ranks seventh in the district by total yards. He is averaging 108 yards per game, which ranks him ninth overall. He will be a player to watch as Northbrook still seeks win No. 1 of the season.

Spring Woods through the first four games of the year is 2-2. Not a bad start for the Tigers. A key player for the Tigers thus far has been junior Anthony Rodriguez. He has been key in the kick return game and defensively. Let's start on the defense. Rodriguez actually leads District 17-6A in interceptions with three through the first four games. He also leads the district in punt return yards with 67, averaging 22.3 yards per return. Rodriguez also has eight kickoff returns, averaging 14.5 yards per return.

The Memorial Mustangs are currently the queens of District 17-6A, posting an 11-4 overall mark and so far going 7-0 in district contests. Memorial is coming off a 3-1 victory over Cy Ridge on Tuesday, which kept them undefeated in district play. Lyla Traylor (140 kills) and Kingsley Wallace (132 kills) have been key pieces to the offensive unit as Logan Leroux (260 assists) and Caroline Howell (165 assists) have been mainly setting them up. Defensively, Lauren Elie leads the team in digs with 222, followed by Traylor's 183 and Megan Xie's 166. This team is loaded. This is a big weekend coming up for Memorial as they will host a dual-match with Ridge Point and Pearland Dawson at the Don Coleman Coliseum.

In Division I, the Stratford boys took first place. Maddox Durnell took sixth overall with a time of 16:40.70 and just two seconds behind him was teammate Jackson Potter. They are both sophomores. Finishing ninth overall was junior Zach Tobin (16:44.70) and in 10th was sophomore Jacob Waltz (16:44.70). Sophomore William Wylie took 12th with a time of 16:48.40. A great sign for Stratford that four of their five Top 15 finishers this past weekend are just sophomores. Another big nod here is the team Stratford beat out for the title was powerhouse The Woodlands.
On the girls' side, Stratford took second overall as a team. The group was led by freshman Niamh Collins, who posted a time of 19:27.20. Sophomore Maggie Pearce took sixth with a time of 19:31.20 and freshman Allie Weinhardt finished eighth overall with a time of 19:37.70. Two freshmen finishing in the Top 10 is impressive.
