Undefeated Roosevelt Battles MacArthur In 27-6A Opener; Plans To End Playoff Drought In 2019

San Antonio Roosevelt (4-0, 1-0) has been a great San Antonio area surprise in 2019, and continued its winning ways with a come-from-behind 27-16 win against North East ISD foe San Antonio MacArthur (1-3, 0-1) at Jerry Comalander Stadium on Friday.

The Rough Riders faced seven-point deficits in both the first and second quarters because MacArthur's Charles Collins recorded early touchdowns and the Brahmas blocked Roosevelt's first PAT, but three straight VYPE Player of the Game Rashod Owens touchdowns helped them bounce back.

"It was real big," said Owens. "I can't thank nothing but my teammates for pushing me every day, and we worked hard for that win."

Roosevelt also got a break in MacArthur's missed PAT in the second quarter, and used a Robert Meadows fourth quarter score to wrap up a 14-3 second half edge.

The Rough Riders may have missed the last six UIL postseasons, but are the only 4-0 27-6A team in 2019. They're definitely confident for a tough stretch that includes San Antonio Madison, South San, San Antonio Reagan and San Antonio Johnson the next four games, but translating that to success against programs of that magnitude will ultimately decide if they're a UIL 6A playoff contender or the UIL 27-6A district favorite.

"Take one step at a time and practice hard every day," Owens said of the approach the rest of the season.
