On Friday, the Willis Wildkats football team took on the Grand Oaks Grizzlies in a tough district matchup.
Check out the highlights from the game below!
Ryson Nunez of New Waverly has an amazing story of inspiration
Up Interstate 45, tucked between Willis and Huntsville, sits a small Texas railroad town.
Once known as Waverly Station, this is New Waverly — a place caught between the echoes of its past and the promise of its future.
The railroad still cuts through town. Hometown diners still line the main street. And the Louisiana-Pacific mill keeps turning out the plywood that drives the town economy.
Above it all stands St. Joseph’s Catholic Church — a beacon of faith, family and tradition in a town on the verge of tremendous growth.
But in New Waverly, one story stands above the rest.
Meet Ryson Nunez.
He’s the big man on campus. The quarterback under Friday night lights. The point guard when the gym is jumping. And the centerfielder patrolling the diamond.
Three sports. Three starting roles. All-District honors in every one.
And he does it all with one arm.
You have to see it to believe it.
But to understand Ryson, you have to go back to the very beginning.
During pregnancy, his umbilical cord became wrapped around his arm. His parents were stunned when doctors delivered the news. They were told that much of his arm would have to be removed.
It was a moment that would shape Ryson's life before he ever took his first breath.
Fifteen years later, that little boy has become the talk of the town. Confident. Fearless. Full of swagger but underneath it all is something even more powerful.
Grit. The kind that can’t be taught. The kind that shows up when the lights come on, when the game is on the line, and when the odds say you can’t.
In a town built on hard work, faith and community, Ryson Nunez is writing a story all his own.
The hot streak continues for Pearland.
The Oilers handed a formidable Manvel squad its first loss of the season, putting up 41 points against a defense that had previously allowed just seven points all year. The statement win pushed coach BJ Gotte and company to 6-0 overall, including an unblemished 4-0 start to the district schedule.
As the defending district champions, the ultimate decider could come at the end of October when Pearland meets Shadow Creek. But with Manvel now checked off the list, the Oilers have another obstacle behind them as they turn their attention to Alvin this Friday night.
Offensively, Pearland has found plenty of ways to keep defenses on their heels. Junior running back Royce Swan, a second-team all-district selection in 2025, is thriving as the RB1 and approaching 1,000 rushing yards with 13 touchdowns on the year. Senior Ryan Miller has provided an excellent complementary piece with eight scores of his own.
Senior quarterback Kaleb Smith has also proven adept at spreading the wealth to a receiving corps featuring Lance Goree Jr., KJ Johnson, and Michael Shawver.
The defense has been just as imposing, conceding roughly 10 points per contest. Houston commit Kamryn Harris has been a menace off the edge with five sacks and 34 total tackles, while junior middle linebacker Terrence Spriggs has already racked up 60 tackles. Safety Terrell Johnson adds another layer of physicality against the run while creating turnovers, with two forced fumbles and an interception.
Six games in, Pearland has already made a statement. The Oilers now have their sights set on what comes next.
