Benbrook at Fort Worth Eastern Hills at Herman Clark Stadium
This is a key game in District 5-4A Division I play as both are 1-0 in district. They are also two of the four teams in the district that are 3-1, along with Kennedale and Fort Worth Carter-Riverside. The Benbrook Bobcats quarterback Lucas Davis went over the 1,000-yard mark last week and has thrown for 1,036 yards with 11 touchdowns compared to only three interceptions. The Highlanders have a more balanced approach with running back Chris Johnson averaging 150 yards per game. He’s scored 13 touchdowns in four games for Eastern Hills, which won a playoff game last year for the first time since 1999.
Melissa at Frisco Heritage at Ford Center at The Star
Melissa is in a tough spot coming into the game on a 3-game losing streak. Granted, the losses have come to a Class 6A-ranked team in Denton Guyer and 5-point losses to Rockwall and Frisco Lone Star. Expectations are high at Melissa, but a win here evens the Cardinals' district record at 1-1 in District 5-5A Division I play. Jeremiah “Bear” Tabor has run for 429 yards and 6 touchdowns for Melissa. The Coyotes are also 1-3 and 0-1 and coming off a loss to McKinney North. Zalyn Providence is averaging 12.7 tackles per game for Heritage.
Friday, Oct. 2
Argyle at Eagle Mountain at Knight Stadium
Argyle is one of the hottest 1-loss teams in DFW. The Eagles are 4-1 with four wins in a row since dropping the opener against Oak Ridge (California). Quarterback Hayes Hackney has already put up monster numbers — 94-for-128 for 1,542 yards with 19 touchdowns. Eagle Mountain is 1-4 overall and dropped its opener in District 3-5A Division II to Nevada Community and now faces No. 4 Argyle.
Denton Guyer at Denton Braswell at Carrico Stadium
This is a solid matchup in District 5-6A with Denton Guyer coming in ranked No. 10 in the Associated Press/Dave Campbell’s Texas Football poll and ranked No. 7 in the VYPE DFW rankings. Denton Braswell is 4-0 and, like Guyer, is 1-0 in district play. Sophomore running back Chris Lark ran for 163 yards and 2 scores for the Bengals last week against Flower Mound. If history is any indicator, the Guyer Wildcats should be the favorite. Since the series started in 2020, Guyer has won all 6 meetings vs. Braswell.
Frisco Legacy Christian at Dallas Parish Episcopal at Fleeger Field at Gloria H. Snyder Stadium
Harrison Phillips had two touchdown catches to help Dallas Parish Episcopal escape with a 20-17 win over Dallas Bishop Lynch last week. The Panthers are 4-2 heading into this TAPPS Division I District 1 game. Frisco Legacy Christian is coming off a big win, 43-39, against Plano Prestonwood Christian. It was the Eagles’ first win against one of the DFW TAPPS powerhouse programs, but is 0-3 vs. Parish. Wide receiver Braden Harbour is averaging 133 yards per game and has 9 touchdowns in five games.
Dallas Highland Park at North Richland Hills Richland at Birdville ISD Fine Arts/Athletic Complex
Class 5A Division I No. 9th ranked Richland hosts Dallas Highland Park in a big District 6-5A Division I matchup. Both squads won district openers last week and the winner of this one will have a leg up in the race for a district title. Birdville will have a say in the matter as well with a 5-0 and 1-0 mark. Ged Kates’ Richland Royals are also 5-0 and have one of the best backfields in the area with quarterback Brett Kates (949 yards passing, 10 touchdowns passing, 5 rushing touchdowns) and running back Jayshon Gibson (739 yards rushing, 14 touchdowns). Highland Park is 2-3, and in both wins the Scots have scored 38 points. QB Buck Randall is an SMU pledge who broke Matthew Stafford’s passing records for yards and touchdowns.
Lewisville at Frisco Wakeland at Toyota Stadium
Lewisville will look to continue its winning ways—a win in every game this season, but only 1-3 in the eyes of UIL. Last week, Aiden Evans ran for three touchdowns in a win against Flower Mound Marcus. The new QB1 for the Fighting Farmers will get a good test against a Wakeland team that was 11-2 last year. The Wolverines lost 35-7 to Denton Guyer last week in District 5-6A play. In both losses, the Wolverines scored only 7 points.
The Austin High Maroons battled the Bowie Bulldogs to a near-draw throughout much of the first half of their critical District 26-6A matchup, trailing just 7-3 around the 2-Minute Timeout. But Bowie was too much. The Bulldogs scored on a run from senior Deuce Brown to take a 14-3 lead into the House Park Fieldhouse, then pulled away in the second half for a convincing 31-3 lead over the Maroons in last week’s VYPE Austin Centex Game of the Week.
The Maroons actually drew first blood in this battle between ancient Austin ISD rivals. Senior Alex Garcia drilled a 40-yard field goal to stake Coach Jason Cecil’s squad to an early 3-0 lead.
It didn’t last long.
Senior Cooper Medeiros returned the ensuing kickoff 38 yards to set up the Dawgs in Austin High territory. Jr. quarterback Connor O’Dea connected with senior Evan Dranguet on a beautiful pass and catch to the 3-yard line and senior Rhys Moreno knifed into the end zone to give Coach Jeff Ables’ Dawgs a lead they’d never relinquish.
With the Maroons playing stout defense, the lead didn’t increase, however, until Brown capped off a long, grinding drive with his 6-yard run just before halftime to finally nudge the Bowie lead to 14-3.
The Bulldogs finally took control of the game in the second half. O’Dea (7-16, 166 yds., TD) connected again with Dranguet (5-154, 30.8 YPC, TD) for a scoring strike, Moreno (15-77, 5.1 YPC, 2 TD) wore down the Marron defense and junior D.J. De La Pena added a field goal as Bowie gradually pulled away for a clutch win.
Bowie (1-0, 4-1) has the Bye on ACL weekend while Austin High (0-1, 0-4) travels to Bob Shelton Stadium in Buda to take on the Hays Rebels Friday night (10/2). VYPE Live will broadcast that game.

The headline for Week 5 of the high school football season for UIL teams was the news that dropped Friday morning.
Lewisville quarterback Laykon Brassfield was ruled ineligible and the Fighting Farmers had to forfeit three convincing wins and were now 0-3.
Hours later, a new quarterback led Lewisville to win No. 1 — technically — against Flower Mound Edward S. Marcus in the Battle of Axe.
That showing of Aiden Evans was one of five things we learned last week.
The Sam Houston State pledge took over at quarterback and threw for a touchdown and carried the ball 6 times for 167 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 40-7 win. It was a situation where Coach Michael Odle put the ball in the hands of his playmakers.
Add in a touchdown catch from Derrick Martin Jr., a Missouri State commit, and the Farmers still have a recipe that could be a factor come postseason time.
The second-biggest news was the end of a winning streak for Aledo in district play.
The Bearcats had won 136 in a row, dating back to 2007, which spanned many classes over the years. Now, in Class 6A, the Bearcats suffered a loss to Arlington Martin, 35-21.
The Warriors scored the go-ahead score on Chase Devoll’s pass to Malik Mason for 13 yards. Kaden Phillips ran for a 33-yard score late in the fourth to ice.
For Aledo, it was the first time it lost back-to-back home games since 2005. It was the nation's longest active district winning streak.
Martin improved to 5-0, passing the win total for the past two years — 3-7 in 2024 and 4-6 in 2025.
Keller improved to 5-0 with a 54-53 win in overtime over Fort Worth Boswell on Friday.
A touchdown run in overtime and a PAT gave Keller the lead. The game ended when Boswell missed the PAT.
Blake Dyniewski ran for 161 yards and 3 touchdowns for Keller. Graham Kaler had two receiving touchdowns — on 3 catches for 142 yards.
The torrid start has allowed Keller to match the win total of last year — when they were 5-6. Keller also had 5 wins in 2024.
Now, with District 3-6A play coming up, Keller will be tested. The Indians were also 5-0 in 2024, but closed with a 2-4 record and a loss to eventual state champion North Crowley in the playoffs.
McKinney North posted a 52-24 win over Frisco Heritage in the District 5-5A Division I opener.
While there are plenty of games left, the Bulldogs are now 4-0 and already surpassed last year’s 3-7 mark.
Next up is to get to win No. 5 and match what the team did in 20024.
The Bulldogs used a strong rushing attack with 43 carries for 477 yards — 11.09 yards per carry — and scored five touchdowns on the ground. John Richardson led the way with 13 carries for 138 yards and accounted for three of the touchdowns.
Two weeks ago, Lucas Lovejoy had a walk-off win on a Hail Mary.
This week, an overtime win over Colleyville Heritage, 38-35, in District 3-5A Division II play.
Quarterback Nixon Slaughter had the game-winning touchdown on a 3-yard run that was the winner. Slaughter ran for 3 touchdowns and also passed for two more, to go with 291 yards.
The Leopards improved to 5-0 and are only one win shy of matching last year’s win total. There are five games left on the schedule — three of them against teams that are either 4-1 or 4-0 right now.
How the games against Nevada Community, Argyle and The Colony will decide who the district champion is and which school will be fighting to avoid the No. 4 seed.
