Coach Bill Robertson’s Patriots (2-2) looked like they might romp early. Junior quarterback Chance Pearce connected with junior Sam Williams on a 48-yard scoring strike to draw first blood. Then senior running back Jayvion Clayter burst free for the first of his three long touchdown runs of the night, this one from 88 yards as the Pats took a quick 13-0 lead.
But Austin High (0-3) answered back. Senior tight end Lorenzo Hoopman capped off a long drive with a tight end’s version of a jet sweep from 3-yards out to make it a 13-7 game at the half.
Coach Jason Cecil’s Maroons took the lead in the third quarter. First, senior quarterback Alijah Jablon connected with junior tight end Davis Deering who had a sensational catch over the middle to set the table. Shortly after, senior running back Niko Gabryluk-Melendez punched it in from 3-yards out and Austin High led 14-13.
The lead didn’t survive the ensuing kickoff, however, as sophomore Josiah Bowens scampered 91 yards on the return to put the Patriots back in front. But that didn’t last either as the Maroons’ junior defensive back Omara Dawson jumped the route on East View’s next possession and notched a Pick-6 to make it 21-20 Austin High. Senior Alex Garcia’s 27-yard field goal nudged the Austin High lead to 24-20 heading into the final frame.
But East View – and Clayter – closed the game the way the same way they opened it. The senior running back broke free for a 48-yard run to give the Patriots the lead for good at 27-24. He then iced the game with two consecutive runs that covered 63 yards to seal East View’s hard-fought win.
The hot and cold Patriots open their first 6A district season Friday night (9/25) vs. Hutto. The Maroons open play in the newly reconfigured District 26-6A against surging Bowie. VYPE Live will broadcast both contests.
