Lake Creek certainly knows how to make an entrance.
Coach Michelle Rochinski and her team of premier athletes decided to make a statement when they faced Frisco Heritage this morning--REPEAT OR BUST.
The opening game of the UIL-5A State Tournament at McCombs Field did not disappoint.
Both Lake Creek and Frisco Heritage initially experienced difficulties when attempting to get their base-runners across home plate--primarily due to the exceptional pitching and defense both sides have come to expect.
However, that all changed in the bottom of the fourth inning, when LSU-signee Maddie McKee (Sr. SS) sparked the Lions offense with an RBI-triple to bring home senior outfielder Jolie Bazan. Shortly after Madalyn Davis (Fr. 2B) and Payton Bauer (Sr. DH/OF) would run home off of two separate errors committed by Frisco Heritage.
With the score now 3-0, Lake Creek didn't have much trouble scoring after that.
Inning No. 5 saw the Lions score five runs to distance themselves from the Coyotes.
Florida-signee Ava Brown (Sr. RHP) began the score-fest with an RBI-double, followed by an RBI-double by freshman phenom Madalyn Davis, a two-RBI double by UTSA-signee Kalee Rochinski (Sr. C), and an RBI-single by senior OF Shelby Winn to make the score 8-0.
Brown would go on to add another run in the ensuing inning, via a sac-fly, which would ultimately seal Lake Creek's return to the UIL State Title game, which will be played tomorrow at 1 pm.
The reigning champs are just one game away from sealing their repeat. Stay tuned.
FBCA IS HOME TO SOME OF THE STATE’S TOP STARS IN THE WORLD OF PRIVATE SCHOOL ATHLETICS.
This year’s Big Man on campus (BMOC) Brady Dever is no exception.
After leading the Eagles to a TAPPS State Championship as the signal-caller for the FBCA team this Fall, the senior aimed to do the same on the diamond to cap off a remarkable high school career.
“It’s definitely tough knowing that my high school days are coming to an end,” said Dever. “I enjoy being out there playing alongside some of my close friends who I’ve grown up with.”
Dever has developed into one of the most feared hitters in TAPPS. He recently became the first athlete in Texas high school athletics to surpass 100 passing touchdowns and record over 100 hits in a career.
The FBCA standout will soon be taking his exceptional talents to Rhode Island where he will be attending Brown University.
“Going to Brown will definitely be an adjustment, both physically and academically,” he said. “The weather there is very cold, and I’ll be working with an entirely new coaching staff. It’s going to be a big adjustment but I’m really excited. Brown is the perfect place for me since the school is just an amazing and prestigious place. I’m really looking forward to it.”
One key aspect of the university that spoke to is the fact that he will have the chance to continue being a dual-sport athlete. Only now it will be as a Brown Bear.
“Growing up, I was always a baseball-first kid. When I had some great seasons for football, I knew I wanted to keep playing both,” Dever said. “Then the chance came where I could do so at Brown. I’ve had some great conversations with Coach (James) Perry (football) and Coach (Grant) Achilles (baseball), and they were some of the driving factors behind my decision. At that point, I knew Brown was the perfect place for me to go.”
Given that this is his final season at Fort Bend Christian Academy, what is it that Dever intends to leave behind?
“I want people to remember me as being a good team leader and teammate,” he said. “I feel like I can leave my mark on people here, especially in baseball. We’ve got a really young team with a couple of freshman in the lineup, so I hope they would see me as a good mentor to them.”
Okay seniors, here is VYPE’s last bit of advice before we send you on your way.
Reboot. Reinvent. Repeat.
What legacy did you leave the last four years? Did you do it big? Did you peak? Did you feel invisible? I bet more than half felt invisible. Well, good news. Your legacy could be right on your horizon… or you might need time to find yourself.
As one page turns, another begins.
A decade ago, there seemed to one SUPER HIGHWAY… college, armed forces or work. Now, paths are all over the place. What will yours be?
There is a 95-percent chance that you have no idea. That’s okay.
I have a kid. She graduated college and is off in the work force.
She told me the other day, “I don’t really know what my purpose is.”
As a parent, that can hit hard. You try and fix it with YOUR ideas. You try and motivate, but that time has come and gone.
I looked back on my life. At the same age, I had no idea what my passion was. I was in lab safety sales in southeast Texas. Like, what?
I talked to her twin brother. Same thing. Trying to figure it out while ginding in the finance world. Our youngest is off to college, with no concrete plan of what she wants to make of her future.
So, what does that mean to you?
You are entering a big change in your life. Your bad days may outnumber your good days. You are going to feel alone, out of your comfort zone and filled with anxiety and doubt.
SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE!!!
Ease your minds, no one has it figured out and if they say they do, they are lying.
But, you have to start your path somewhere. Take some chances. Be bold. Make mistakes. Do it when you are young. Fail forward and learn, but look through a lens of POSITIVITY.
Let me give you this perspective. You have another TWO lifetimes to live. You will figure it out, but you have to keep your eyes open.
In the mean time, take it easy on yourself. Life is a journey, but we are all trying to rush to the next milestone. Yours, included.
Build relationships along the way. Be open, vulnerable and real, and you will be just fine. The biggest key… believe in yourself. Even if you think you have nothing going for you and can’t see up… you have worth. NEVER FORGET THAT.
Take if from VYPE. Here’s your pat on the back, now go get’em.
