Some of the stars of 2023-24 Friendswood Girls Basketball
Friendswood enters the third year of the Christian Thompson-era.
The veteran boys hoops coach came home to his alma mater in 2021 to take over the girls' program and has gone 37-30 in his first two seasons, including the squad going 20-15 a year ago while reaching the Area Round.
Four starters return off that team, making Friendswood a favorite to not only get back into the playoff dance but make a deep run as well.
District 18-5A Offensive Player of the Year Helen Byrd averaged 20 points per game a year ago and was named to the All-Region team.
Volleyball star Nadi’ya Shelby and Claire Radtke were first-team, all-district picks a year ago, while Mabry Venables was a second-teamer.
The keys are defense and controlling the tempo through pressing. The motto for Thompson’s squad will be Defense Wins.
The stars of 2023-24 Oak Ridge Girls Basketball
Deidre Vasquez enters her 11th season of leading the Oak Ridge program. This year, the veteran coach is in line to earn her 200th coaching victory at Oak Ridge.
The War Eagles are coming off a 25-8 year, which saw them reach the Area Round. Two starters return off that team as they seek a seventh-straight trip to the playoffs in 2024.
District 13-6A Offensive MVP Taylor Jones returns after averaging 18.6 points, 12.1 assists and 2.9 steals per game a year ago. Jones is verbally committed to Bethany College in Kansas.
Treasure Emeh is also back off a first-team, all-district performance.
Keys to success this year, according to Vasquez, include team chemistry, offensive execution and young post play. Vasquez wants her team to “turn up the heat” in 2024.
2023-24 Hightower Girls Basketball
The Hurricanes, which was a relatively young team in 2023, reached the Regional Quarterfinals a year ago before falling in a close one to Katy, 50-47.
Fort Bend Hightower finished the season overall at 32-4, while going 15-1 in district play.
Madison Bob returns for her senior year and will be the leader on the court for the Hurricanes. Bob is verbally committed to Sam Houston State.
Also, watch out for Breonna Shelby, Alannah Nerocker, Jaya Johnson, Daija Thomas, Chandler Caver and Kailee Beaudion-Foliaki to make an impact as well this season. This team is primed for a run in 2024.
