The Cedar Park Timberwolves raced out to a 14-0 lead then made it stick enroute to a clutch 35-25 District 8-5A-1 win over neighborhood rival Rouse Friday night (10/4) from Gupton Stadium in the VYPE Central Texas High School Football Game of the Week on 102.7 FM ESPN Austin radio.
Explosive junior running back Trae Hill set the tone early, breaking free for a 46-yard touchdown run on Cedar Park’s opening series. Even slowed by injuries, Hill would still go on to crack the century mark on just eight carries. Sophomore quarterback David Cooper (18-23, 117, 2 TDs) tossed the first of two scoring strikes – both to senior Zane Claybrook -- to stake the T’wolves to that early lead.
Rouse’s junior quarterback London Montgomery (29-40, 308 Yds., 3 TDs.) responded with a 40-yard strike to Cameron Cooks to trim the lead to 14-7 after an eventful first quarter but Cedar Park never relinquished that early lead.
Cooper also rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown, while sophomores Lucas Viloria (10-50) and Cameron Graham (4-8, TD) took some of the load off Hill.
Junior Anthony Reyes (19-82) had a solid rushing night for the Raiders, while senior Leland Smit hauled in two of Morgan’s scoring strikes, but it wasn’t enough.
Cedar Park (2-0, 3-2) finds itself alone in first place in what promises to be a wild playoff chase. The Timberwolves have a short week before heading to Georgetown’s Birkelbach Field for a critical Thursday night (10/10) clash with resurgent East View (1-1, 3-2) in a game VYPE will broadcast separately for each school. Rouse (1-1, 2-3) will also play on Thursday, hosting Georgetown (1-1, 4-1) in a high-stakes matchup of their own at Bible Stadium.
With no major upsets, there was minimal movement in the top half of this week’s Power Rankings. Round Rock bounced back to climb a couple of spots while Buda Johnson slipped a couple after losing to Canyon.
Further down, Georgetown also rebounded with an impressive win to leap-frog crosstown rival East View, whose comeback came up just short in overtime. Leander and Cedar Ridge are attracting some eyeballs and scratched their way into this week’s poll.
Regents continues to dominate the private schools but keep an eye on St. Michael’s.
Here’s the rundown heading into Week 7.

That pretty much sums up this week’s Austin-area 4A-6A volleyball rankings, which remain largely unchanged. Dripping Springs cemented its place on top with a straight set win over #2 Austin High, although all three sets were reasonably close. That, combined with two previous wins over new #3 Buda Johnson, kept the Maroons in the second spot.
Johnson and Vandegrift both moved up as Wimberley slipped to #5 after losing a tough 5-set match to a very good Davenport club. The bottom five remain the same, with Cedar Park, Liberty Hill, Weiss and Georgetown sweeping all their opponents; #10 Round Rock also won both their matches although they had the audacity to drop a set to Stony Point.
