The game may be especially important for Austin High (0-2) since they missed out on their season-opener in San Antonio when Mother Nature threw her hissy fit. After a close loss vs. Westwood, the Maroons fell harder to Jarrell last week and need a good outing heading into district.
Coach Jason Cecil’s club will be looking for offensive production from platooning senior quarterbacks Alijah Jablon and Whit Davenport with senior feature back Niko Gabryluk-Melendez (aka “GM”) powering the ground game.
Defensively, senior middle linebacker and captain Ethan Kahle anchors the Austin High defense which will need to tighten up if the Maroons are going to take advantage of longtime nemeses Westlake and Lake Travis’ absences in a still-loaded District 26-6A. Rashad Carrington holds down the defensive line, Ryder Moody provides solid support off the edge, and Omare Dawson blankets opposing receivers from the corner.
While Austin High still looks for its first win of the season, East View (1-2) broke through last week. After a competitive loss against undefeated Cedar Ridge and a humbling loss vs. Brenham, Coach William Roberston’s Patriots notched a convincing 56-15 win over first-year program Legacy Ranch.
Junior quarterback Chance Pearce (26-39, 330 Yds., 3 TD, 2 INT) powers the East View passing game with most of his throws going to junior receiver Sam Williams and sophomore Madden Rose. Senior running back Jayvion Clayter (45-269. 6.0 YPC, 3 TD) leading the ground attack.
Senior Jalani Culpepper. Junior Landon Wallace and sophomore Brenndan Magee lead the way for the East View defense.
While Austin High’s playoff chances automatically improve in a district without Lake Travis and Westlake, the Maroons need to improve fast to reach the postseason. East View, meanwhile, finds itself randomly lumped into a district with five Leander ISD schools and Hutto. This non-district finale will propel one of these teams into district play on a high note.
