ASHTIAN CHATHAM BALANCES TWO WORLDS β AND THRIVES IN BOTH.
A student at Aldine Blanson CTE High School, where sheβs pursuing computer programming, Chatham heads across the district to compete for Davis High School track and field β and sheβs rewriting the record books when she gets there.
βIβm a very competitive person,β she said. βWhen I first started, I wasnβt that good β but I wanted to get better. It stuck. My improvement was gradual.β
That steady climb turned into history. Chatham now holds the school records in the 400 and 800 meters, with bigger goals still ahead.
βMy goals this year are to also break the school record for the mile.β
Middle-distance racing is as mental as it is physical β something she embraces.
βThe 400 and 800 are really about who wants it more at the end,β she said. βItβs about grit.β
What she loves most about track is its simplicity β and its honesty.
βIf I do good, itβs because of me. If I do bad, itβs on me too,β she said. βYou donβt have to depend on anyone else.β
Make no mistake β she wants to win.
βI like to win. Thatβs just how Iβm built. But Iβm not mean competitive.β
Her future includes college track, but her ambitions stretch beyond the oval. At Blanson CTE, sheβs immersed in computer programming and sees herself one day becoming a data analyst.
βIβm into computer programming. I see myself being a data analyst,β she said.
The balance isnβt always easy. Sheβs enrolled in AP and dual-credit classes β a workload that demands discipline.
βItβs very stressful to be in AP classes and dual-credit classes,β she admitted. βBut I wouldnβt have it any other way. I like to challenge myself. In the classroom, I try my best.β
Track provides a contrast.
βBlanson is where I go for academics. I come to Davis to do sports. Davis is a breath of fresh air. Itβs cool to meet all sorts of different people.β
Off the track, she keeps things light. She plays volleyball with friends, enjoys cooking β and especially eating β and is currently catching up on the anime One Piece.
βI love the fantasy aspect of the genre,β she said. βI love Zoro β heβs always getting lost. I can relate to that.β
Lost? Maybe sometimes. Driven? Always.
Whether sheβs chasing a school record, debugging code or grinding through the final stretch of an 800, Ashtian Chatham is proof that competitiveness and curiosity can coexist β and that the finish line is only the beginning.
