The Mustangs delivered one of Week 2’s biggest surprises, knocking off VYPE’s previously No. 1-ranked C.E. King, 31-28, on a walk-off 40-yard field goal.
For the performance, Coach William Blaylock and the Cypress Ranch Mustangs are the Week 2 Whataburger Team of the Week.
Led by UH commit Braden Baker at quarterback, Cypress Ranch shocked the Houston high school football landscape by taking down CE King, a Class 6A Division II state finalist last season.
It was a true team effort.
Baker orchestrated the offense, SMU commit Amari Vickerson helped lead the defense, and Nate Carrier delivered the clutch moment with the game-winning 40-yard field goal as time expired.
It was the kind of win that can change the trajectory of a season.
The Mustangs showed they can compete with — and beat — the best teams in the Houston area.
Now, Cypress Ranch has to build on the momentum.

The Panthers (30-3) and Memorial (24-3) have skyrocketed in the state rankings, emerging from the fall tournament stage as legitimate contenders wielding ridiculously balanced starting rotations. Tompkins (17-5) and Cy Ranch (20-7) aren’t far behind among the undeniable heavy-hitters, joined by Clear Springs, Fulshear, College Park, Seven Lakes, and Grand Oaks.
Meanwhile, Jordan (18-7), Dawson (18-11), and Bridgeland (13-9) have each made considerable strides in short order, steadily climbing the charts and adding another layer to an increasingly crowded field.
The same competitive pulse carries into the 5A/4A rankings. Lake Creek (25-8) has knocked off quality 6A opponents including Grand Oaks, Clear Springs, Plano East, and College Park over the past three weeks, establishing the Lions as a formidable force in 5A. Friendswood (21-6) and Montgomery (26-6) follow closely behind, while breakout squads Kempner (22-2) and Iowa Colony (19-8) have joined the mix.
