Along with honoring the preseason Houston Area High School Boys and Girls preseason teams, the now annual luncheon will feature the head men’s and women’s basketball coaches from the University of Houston, Rice University, St. Thomas University, Texas Southern University, Prairie View A&M University and Houston Chrisitan University.
The event will also give fans an opportunity to hear the coaches speak about their seasons and participate in a panel conversation. The inaugural event will feature ESPN college basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla. Fraschilla was previously the head college basketball coach at Manhattan College, St. John’s University and the University of New Mexico.

Unranked Fulshear knocks off No. 10 Waller to move back into the rankings

What a wild weekend of high school football in Greater Houston, as upsets ruled the day.
Cypress Falls kicked off the chaos Thursday night, as the Eagles knocked off No. 7 Cy-Fair with a last-second Hail Mary on the VYPE Thursday Night Showdown powered by Daspit Law.
The upsets continued Friday, as No. 16 Bridgeland took down No. 2 Cypress Ranch, which had looked nearly unbeatable entering district play. Then, a banged-up College Park squad rallied to beat No. 5 Willis in a pivotal district matchup.
Unranked Fulshear capped off the weekend by taking down No. 10 Waller.
With several ranked teams taking losses, the Class 6A rankings have been reshuffled heading into Week 6.
Meanwhile, Randle and Angleton continue to lead the way in Class 5A, while Lutheran South makes its debut in the private school rankings.

Rankings such as this one are a lot like going in for a vision test. You sit in a big chair, and the technician slides that heavy metal goggle contraption in front of your face. Then he or she starts toggling back and forth between settings, dialing in your lenses as your vision gradually comes into focus.
That’s’ where we are in this week’s Power Rankings as we head towards this week’s midway point of the season. To be honest, however, there wasn’t a lot of movement this past week. Most of the ranked teams won and won handily, a couple had their Bye and only one ranked squad went down.
Still, as things come into better focus as more games get played, we’re bumping Westlake and Round Rock up to join Lake Travis on the podium after all three notched impressive wins. Weiss settled at #4 after holding off stubborn Killeen Shoemaker and Dripping Springs rounded out the top 5 with a lopsided win.
District 24-6A is a defensive coordinator’s nightmare with Hutto, Cedar Park and Rouse all cracking the half-century scoring mark in their district openers. Hutto eased in front of idle Vandegrift with the Timberwolves packed in behind the Vipers. Anderson fell hard at Champion but remained in the Top 10 at #9 while Bowie rounded out the Top 10 after pulling away from Austin High for a big District 26-6A win.
The bottom half of the Rankings was easy. Everyone either won or had the night off, so no positions changed. But, man, undefeated Cedar Ridge is thissss close to cracking the Top 10 after a shut out win. Hays remained at #12, followed by the aforementioned Raiders from Rouse at #13, Liberty Hill at #14 with a nice bounce back win and Wimberley, our top 4A team.
Taylor, Georgetown, Lockhart, Lago Vista and Hendrickson all held serve to close out the rankings, but Legacy Ranch is lurking just on the outside looking for a crack to slip back in.
Some clear separation has emerged amongst Austin area private schools. Regents cruised to an easy road win in San Antonio while St. Michael’s bested St. Pius X to remain #1 and #2. #3 Hyde Park comfortably blanked Hill Country Christian to establish that divide, as the latter had edged Brentwood Christian earlier in the season. (We get the enrollment factor but does anybody else wish that these schools could actually all play each other in the same district?)
More district matchups mean more chances to compare and contrast teams in the weeks ahead and the big picture will continue to come into focus.
Just like when the ophthalmologist asks, “Which is better, A or B?”
