Whataburger Team of the Week: Kingwood Baseball on the precipice of history, following sweep against Memorial

Coming off one of their most impressive performances of the season, Kingwood has earned the distinction of Whataburger Team of the Week, following a commanding sweep over Memorial in the UIL 6A-D2 Region III Semifinals.

Kingwood took control of the series early, winning Game 1 on Thursday by a score of 10-5 before clinching the sweep with a 5-2 victory on Friday.

The Mustangs now hold a 34-3 record for the 2025 season, showcasing their dominance in what has been a monumental playoff run.

Under the direction of second-year head coach Michael Oros, Kingwood has advanced well beyond last year’s Area Round finish and will now face Katy Taylor in the Region III Final later this week.

The series marks a pivotal opportunity for the Mustangs, who are seeking their first trip to the UIL State Tournament since their championship season in 2005.

Kingwood's success has been fueled by a talented and experienced core. Senior right-hander Ben Mayorga, a LeTourneau University-commit, has been a key presence on the mound.

In the infield, Cornell-bound senior Caden Callaway has helped anchor both the defense and lineup, alongside versatile senior contributors Nick Spetter and Bryce Baker.

Sophomore right-hander Ryder Renfro has also emerged as a breakout performer, playing a critical role in the postseason stretch.

The Mustangs will begin their best-of-three Region III Final series against Katy Taylor on Thursday at 7:00 PM at Rice University. Game 2 will follow on Friday at 7:00 PM at Klein Forest High School. If necessary, a decisive Game 3 will take place Saturday morning at 11:00 AM, also at Klein Forest.

As they stand just one series away from a long-awaited return to the state stage, Kingwood’s blend of veteran leadership and emerging talent continues to drive one of the program’s most memorable seasons in recent history.
