Jack Yates is coming off an 11-1 season where the Lions reached the Area Round of the playoffs. In district play, the Lions posted a perfect 8-0 record. It marked Yates’ first outright district championship since 2010 – the Lions were co-district champs in 2012. Second-year coach Jason Lewis and the Lions bring back 12 starters including reigning District Newcomer of the Year Jordan Simmons at running back. Simmons, who is committed to Stephen F. Austin, had 1,691 all-purpose yards last year and scored 21 touchdowns. They also bring back second-team all-district back Michael Johnson, who rushed for 617 yards and 11 touchdowns a year ago. Other offensive players to watch include first-team all-district fullback Derrick Hines and second-team OL Derrick Wolford. Also watch for WR Landon Domio, who heading into the season had six offers, including Houston, Texas Tech and Baylor. Defensively, first-team all-district selections Saviour Davis (DT), McKinley Davis (OLB — 65 tackles, 8.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 1 INT), Zayveon Robinson (CB — 37 tackles, 5 INTs) and Autril Watkins (S — 37 tackles, 7.5 TFL, 7 INTs) are all set to return. Last season saw North Forest finish 8-3 overall and go 7-1 in district play. The Bulldogs won four-straight games to close out the regular season schedule and place second in the standings before the playoffs. Clifton Terrell enters his 10th season at the helm (48-42) of the program and returns 14 starters, including eight on the offensive side of the ball. Reigning District Defensive MVP Javeon Taylor returns to the team after registering 48 tackles, 27.5 tackles for loss and 26 sacks. Those are ridiculous numbers for any player in Texas. First-team all-district selection Daveon Perkins (391 yards, 6 TDs) and second-teamer Traveon Terrell (491 yards, 7 TDs) are both set to return at receiver. First-team all-district OL Tim Johnson returns up front as well. Defensively, first-team all-district inside linebacker Darrius Garrett (41 tackles) and second-team outside linebacker Keshaun Palmer will lead the defense. Perkins was also a first-team all-district pick for his play at safety after recording a team-high nine interceptions. Kicker Nicholas Garcia also returns after a second-team all-district campaign. Keys to success include offensive line and quarterback play according to Terrell.
