Lewisville linebacker Javar Curington looks at Denton Guyer quarterback Carter Morgan earlier this season.
Week 9 of the Texas High School football season for UIL schools featured some playoff berths clinched, perhaps none bigger than what happened in Argyle.
That is one of the five things we thought stood out this past weekend.
Sophomore Cobe Wilson was forced into action due to the District Executive Committee (DEC) ruling that said Hayes Hackney was unavailable to play further due to residency issues. Read about the news here.
As for the game against Colleyville Heritage, sophomore Cobe Wilson was 16 for 22 passing for 219 yards and 3 touchdowns. Two of those went to Texas Tech pledge Julian Caldwell (6 catches, 108 yards) and Oklahoma State commit Ake O’Neal had the other touchdown reception.
Logan Rexroat also helped by rushing for 239 yards with 3 TDs. The Eagles clinched the district title with the win. That’s big and then Wilson’s showing was even bigger, given the circumstances.
Lewisville battled to the very end, but secured a 28-18 win over Flower Mound with a fourth-quarter rally.
The game was a battle for first place in District 5-6A and now the Fighting Farmers are 5-3 overall and 5-0 in district games. Denton Guyer is a game back, but Lewisville won the head-to-head matchup. QB Laykon Brassfield returned after a 4-game absence to lead the Farmers to a win. He was shaky a bit — 57% completion rate and 2 TDs with 4 interceptions — but his touchdown run provided the game-winning score in the fourth. A pick-6 by Taelyn Mayo added the icing on the cake for a 5th straight win and 9th straight if you look at the wins turned to losses by the DEC.
Waxahachie posted a 35-28 win over Duncanville in a District 11-6A clash for second place. The two teams trailed North Crowley, who had beaten both of them earlier this season.
The first five drives ended in touchdowns for both teams.
The score looked like it was close, but thanks to 3 touchdown passes from Jerry Meyer III in the first half, Waxahachie took a 35-14 lead at the break.
The Panthers scored twice in the second half and then had the ball twice with a chance to tie, but came up short both times with turnovers on downs in their own territory.
The nationally ranked Allen Eagles keep putting up video-game-like numbers.
The latest was a 77-14 win over Dallas Jesuit. In the past 5 games, Allen has scored 51, 65, 70, 70 and now 77.
Makes you wonder what is in store for McKinney Boyd this week?
The defense got 3 first-half turnovers and sophomore quarterback Ty Snell accounted for five touchdowns. He threw 4 touchdowns and 255 yards and ran for 96 yards on 4 carries and scored again.
The adage in sports, especially in tough district/conference/leagues, is that there are no days off.
For the media types, we can often project what we think could be a day off, or in some cases, when a team with a much better record plays a team with a much worse record.
Case in point: 6-1 Keller vs. 0-7 Justin Northwest last week.
So what happened? The winless Texans posted a 27-14 win.
The game was tied at 14-14 at halftime, but Northwest took a TD run from Caris Sela and a pick-6 from Brady Taylor to ice the win.
Hurst Lawrence Dale Bell High School put up some impressive numbers late for a win in District 8-6A play against South Grand Prairie. The Blue Raiders ultimately won 31-20 in Grand Prairie.
What makes the score even crazier is that Bell trailed 7-3 going into the fourth.
Then the Blue Raiders scored 28 points in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the Warriors added two more touchdowns in a shootout loss.
The two were tied in the district standings with a 3-1 mark heading into the game.
Tomball (30-7) climbs back into H-Town’s Top 3 after rallying to claim the District 15-6A crown.
District battles are in the rearview. Now, the road to State promises high-stakes showdowns, potential upsets, and plenty of postseason drama. Here's how the final rankings stack up before the madness begins.
Cy Ranch (34-7) holds firm atop the 6A rankings after completing an unbeaten district slate, while Memorial, Seven Lakes, and Dawson accomplished the same feat — setting the stage for what could be lengthy postseason pursuits.
Meanwhile, Tomball (30-7) turned up the heat in the second round of district play, defeating Klein Oak once again while avenging earlier losses to Tomball Memorial, Magnolia, and Klein Cain to reclaim the District 15-6A title. The Lady Coogs consequently surge back into the Top 3, carrying renewed momentum and aspirations of another trip to State.
In the 5A landscape, Lake Creek (37-10) presents a particularly compelling storyline, having captured a share of the District 17-5A title despite enduring one of the area's toughest district slates. By splitting their season series with A&M Consolidated and College Station while sweeping Montgomery, the Lady Lions secured their first district championship since 2021 — and their first under head coach Kayli Kane.
Friendswood, Kempner, and West Fork also finished district play unbeaten, while Bellville and Needville set the pace in 4A.
The rankings are finalized. Now comes the real test.
