People have been asking for months if we were ever going to do a statewide football preview and the short answer has been “maybe.”
After exploring advertising, distribution and various other details, we’re happy to announce the inaugural issue of HSSTM’s Football Preview will be on newsstands this summer.
A high-quality publication similar to our monthly issues — only about three times more pages — will be filled with features and photos of the most deserving players, as well previews like you’ve never seen on 209 football teams across our great state. It will be the first full-color, high school only statewide football preview.
While it won’t be free like our regular magazines, it will be offered at a premium price. We’re already taking pre-orders on our Web site ( HYPERLINK "http://westernarkansas.hsstm.com" http://westernarkansas.hsstm.com) and will continue to have more updates as the summer approaches on the site and in the magazine.
Now on to our ninth issue.
We start with a cover feature on the top three pitchers in the 7A West, who all happen to be left-handers. They talk about what it’s like growing up in a right-handed world while also acknowledging the one place they do have an advantage: the baseball diamond.
Our second feature takes a look at Farmington softball and how coach Randy Osnes has been consistently dominant since winning a state championship in 2000, the first year it started fastpitch.
In Feature No. 3, Gravette three-sporter Ethan McKinzie fights his way back to play baseball — his best sport — from an injury that ended his football season and caused him to sit out of basketball.
Feature 4 highlights Elkins distance runner Grace Heysmfield. Only a sophomore, she’s been in a class all her own for years and plans to continue running at a high level this spring.
Love of baseball is the theme of our fifth feature on versatile Rogers senior Seth White. He’s played so much in school and summer leagues that he’s basically become an on-field coach for the Mounties.
In our LockerTalk section, there’s a recap of signing day and a feature on Rogers runner Aaron Hamilton, who’s one of the best in the nation. Also don’t miss features on Van Buren’s soccer senioritus, Family Affair with Union Christian’s Flastohler brothers, The Grill with Fayetteville softball coach Jason Shirey, One-on-One with Fort Smith Southside’s Brad Jones and much, much more!
