Greenwood’s Zach Turpin is planning a slew of unofficial visits this fall, and he already has been to Arkansas State. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound receiver’s next stop is out of state this weekend when he visits Missouri State.
Other campus visits are planned to in-state colleges Central Arkansas and Ouachita Baptist. Turpin has had more than 70 inquiries from schools such as Boston College, Georgia Southern, Murray State, Stephen F. Austin and Tulsa.
“It feels really good,” said Turpin, who has 4.5 speed. “It’s hard, though. It’s tough keeping track of it and knowing which coach is from where.”
Arkansas State continues to be an attractive alternative to Arkansas for in-state recruits, with the Razorbacks limiting offers inside the state so far in this class.
“I thought Arkansas State was very nice,” Turpin said. “The coaching staff was really friendly and it surprised me because I didn’t know they were going to have turf and things like that.
“It was much nicer than I thought it would be.”
Turpin has 12 catches for 320 yards and 5 touchdowns. He had four touchdowns, including a 70-yarder, in a 42-12 win against Hope in Week 2. This past week, he even scored on an 87-yard kickoff return to start the Bulldogs’ 27-13 win against Morrilton.
Last season, Turpin led the team with 59 receptions for 1,155 yards and 18 touchdowns while catching passes from Razorbacks freshman Tyler Wilson.
While Arkansas doesn’t seem to be an option, Turpin is turning his attention to the schools showing him the most.
He’ll look at all equally on these official visits, and isn’t ruling out visits elsewhere. He hopes to be a teacher and coach after college.
“I’m looking for a place where I get along with the coaching staff and we play winning football,” Turpin said. “Academically, the main thing is a place that gives you plenty of study hall time.”
Turpin plans to get a daily planner to keep up with the colleges he’s considering.
