Led by Springdale schools, area teams have solid showings
Pulaski Academy jumped out to a 26-0 lead en route to a 41-14 win against Sherman, Texas, in the title game of the VYPE Select 7-on-7 tournament at the University of Arkansas practice field. Sherman didn’t score until the 11:04 mark of the 25-minute game.
“That passing attack is as good as any you’ll see at any level in Texas,” Sherman volunteer coach Marcus Leinart said. “That quarterback (Spencer Keith) never missed, and they are just a really good 7-on-7 team.”
PA senior quarterback Spencer Keith hit Carson McKnight for a 40-yard pass on the first play from scrimmage to give the Bruins an 8-0 advantage.
PA defensive back Sam Vogel intercepted a Sherman pass on its first possession, giving the Bruins two more points.
Keith then connected with DJ Daniel on a 1-yard touchdown pass and then hit Will McSpadden on an eight-yard scoring strike to build a 26-0 lead on just three possessions.
“It really started in the (quarterfinals against) Hot Springs Lakeside,” PA coach Kevin Kelley said. “They’re going to be in our conference, and we really wanted to beat them. We were just kind of trudging through this thing, and we got a spark against (Lakeside).
“Against Sherman, we got a quick score and a stop on defense, and kind of set the tone. Fortunately, our offense and defense were able to do that.”
McKnight and Daniel added two more scoring receptions to fuel the route.
Opponents stopped Pulaski Academy’s offense only four times in 11 games. PA finished the tournament undefeated..
Sherman, who plays in Texas’s second largest classification, won a 12-team Dallas Metroplex 7-on-7 league this summer and just missed qualifying for the Texas state tournament.
“We’ve talked about (Texas football) before,” Kelley said. “I’ve coached down there before, so I know it is a different brand of football. The kids don’t always realize it, but we talk about Texas football when we are back at home.
“We wanted to beat a team that is kind of known around the region, and (Sherman) kind of provided that for us that opportunity, and were able to take up on it.”
PA receiver Neal Barlow earned MVP honors, while Keith was the tourney’s Top Gun QB Award.
