A veteran Lake Hamilton squad is the overwhelming favorite after losing to Texarkana in the state title game last fall. The title-game loss was the Wolves’ only setback in 2007.
Texarkana loses running back Dennis Johnson, but the defending champs boast experience on the offensive and defensive line. West Memphis’ best player is its senior kicker Paulo Henriques, but the inexperienced Blue Devils won’t be pushed by a conference that features six teams that owned losing records in 2007. Improved El Dorado and Pine Bluff teams push Lake Hamilton and Texarkana in the upper echelon of the 6A South.

6A VYPE Arkansas Football Preview Poll
1. Lake Hamilton — Tries to win its first state title since 1992.
2. Texarkana — Texarkana could become the only Arkansas prep program to win three straight championships twice.
3. West Memphis — Blue Devils are 0-3 in state-title games in this decade.
4. El Dorado — Wildcats made their first playoff appearance in two seasons last fall.
5. Pine Bluff — Versatile junior quarterback Claude Johnson draws comparisons to former FS Northside quarterback and Auburn sophomore, Kodi Burns.
6. Mountain Home — Only won two games in 2007 after playing for 2006 6A title.
7. Marion — Senior running back Deopolis Smith (1,085 yards rushing in 2007) is one of the state’s underrated running backs.
8. Jacksonville — Senior running back Patrick Geans gives Red Devils “big-play” threat.
9. Benton — Panthers missed a playoff berth in 2007 for the first time in four years.
10. Sheridan — Defense led by senior linebacker Ricky Pickett (117 tackles in 2007) must pick up slack for inexperienced offense.
