“I’ve talked with coaches from all of those schools and a few others, but those are the ones the heaviest ones recruiting me at the moment,” Edwards said. “They’re all wanting to wait and see how my knee does (before they offer).”

Despite having knee surgery in the offseason, college recruiters are keeping a watchful eye on Fort Smith Northside tailback Semaj Edwards.
The 5-foot-10, 186-pounder is the state’s No. 14 prospect in this month’s Top 30 Arkansans and second highest-ranked running back behind West Helena’s Turell Williams, an Arkansas pledge. He also was named to VYPE’s Super Squad for Class 7A in this year’s Arkansas Football Preview.
Edwards, who scored a touchdown in all nine games he played, has yet to receive a Division I scholarship offer as coaches from Arkansas, Alabama, Auburn, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Stanford, Army, Navy and Air Force, among others, are interested.
“I’ve talked with coaches from all of those schools and a few others, but those are the ones the heaviest ones recruiting me at the moment,” Edwards said. “They’re all wanting to wait and see how my knee does (before they offer).”
Edwards participated in the VYPE Select 7-on-7 in Fayetteville on July 11-12 and said he’s “about 85-90 percent” healed from his surgery to repair a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament in his left knee. He had the surgery immediately following the Week 9 injury so he would heal in time for his senior season.
“I’m running and doing everything as far as drills … pretty much everything but contact,” Edwards said.
There was no shying away from contact as a junior as Edwards rushed for more than 1,300 yards and 16 touchdowns with strong running that often forced more than one tackler to try to bring him down.
Edwards sports a 3.5 GPA and scored a 23 on the ACT, which he plans “to take a bunch of more times, as many as I can,” to achieve the highest score he possibly can. That’s why several Ivy League schools such as Brown, Dartmouth and Penn have expressed interest. He also plans to visit Stanford, another school known for academics, before school starts.
“I know it’s a long shot, but I want to major in pre-med,” Edwards said. “More than just football will factor into my decision.”
