OK football fans, we’ve added another addition to our coverage by conducting our own Coaches Poll of the top teams in the state and in the area.

Who knows the teams better than the gus who live it every day, digesting hour after hour of game film and trading insight on each other with their coaching buddies?

No one. That’s why we wanted the coaches to tell us each week who’s hot and who’s not.

We originally planned to only rank teams from Western Arkansas for our Overall Top 10 ranking, but most of the coaches replied with the top teams in the state, so that’s what we’re ranking. As far as the Top 5 Big Schools and Small Schools, we chose to only pick schools from the largest two conferences in our area for the Big Top 5 poll and only schools from the smaller two conferences for our Small Top 5 poll.

Coach in one of the larger conferences only voted for those schools. For example, Greenwood coach Rick Jones picked five teams from the 7A West and 5A West combined.

For the record, 28 head coaches from 28 schools in Western Arkansas were asked to participate, along with two wild card voters. With the majority of the precincts (coaches) reporting, the numbers were compiled to come up with rankings for our three preseason polls. Each coach’s ballot will remain anonymous.

Bentonville came in just ahead of Little Rock Central to take No. 1 in the Overall Top 10 poll, although several other schools such as Fayetteville, Fort Smith Southside, Greenwood, Springdale Har-Ber and Warren received at least one first place vote, which is worth 10 points in our system.

On the Big Top 5 poll, Bentonville barely edged out Fayetteville by a single point while Prairie Grove earned one point more than rival Farmington to earn the No. 1 spot in our Small Top 5 poll, which is comprised of teams from the 1-4A and the 1-3A.
