Still Hauling It In

A dusty hayfield in west Washington County is where one can find Joe Dean Davenport these days.

The former Springdale High, Arkansas Razorbacks and Indianapolis Colts tight end used his professional paychecks on a 580-acre ranch near Cincinatti, a shovel pass south of Siloam Springs on Arkansas Highway 59.

On June 23, Davenport and his wife, Tracy, enjoyed the birth of their first child, a son named Joe Dean Davenport III who they call “Trip.” Their country house with a red tin roof is surrounded by bushes and shrubs. Horses out front are his wife’s, a Mountainburg native who, like her husband, was raised on a farm.

From sun up ‘til sundown, Davenport tends to 300 black angus cows and 15 horned hereford bulls. In between, he cuts hay to sell while growing a small trucking operation.

Everything Davenport does is related to his farm. He has one Peterbilt truck he uses himself because he grew tired of wearing out $40,000 pickups while hauling some 7,000 round bails annually. He has another big rig he keeps on the road full-time hauling cattle and hay.

“My father-in-law is the owner/operator of a big truck and I’ve always had an interest in big trucks,” Davenport said. “Being in the cattle business, it helps market my cattle better because I can take some to Oklahoma City or somewhere instead of paying someone else to do it.

“One guy heard I had it and then another wanted me to haul his stuff, so it’s turned into a bit of a business I’ve just lucked into.”

Davenport hauled in almost as many great catches during his career as he has hay bails, but the wonders of having a son has been the greatest haul of all.

“It kind of changes when you want to be home and help her out,” Davenport said. “So I’ve started trying to get it off as soon as I can … It’s a life-changing deal.”
