Experienced sports editor hired to lead Central Arkansas charge

With 11 years of journalism under his byline, Nate has been in the business long enough to understand how to attack stories and manage people, yet still young enough to exude the energy it takes to get it done on a daily basis.

About eight years ago while I was an editor for three weekly newspapers in Washington County, I kept coming across these clever leads on stories penned by a guy named Nate Olson, sports editor for the Benton County Daily Record.
Working in two different counties, our paths didn’t cross for some time.
Finally, I ran into this Nate guy at a district basketball tournament in Berryville and told him how much I enjoyed his writing. We sat at the press table game after game joking about this or that and discussed our sports coverage philosophies over snacks in the hospitality room.
Needless to say, we hit it off.
We stayed in contact through the years as our careers continued to evolve. Nate went on to central Arkansas and became sports editor of the Pine Bluff Commercial while covering UA-Pine Bluff sports like a blanket. I climbed the ladder at The Morning News of Northwest Arkansas while chasing stories on the Razorbacks.
Nate eventually landed with Hooten’s Arkansas Football, spending the past two years leading the company’s online coverage and helping with its football preview. I spent a year at the NWA Business Journal before joining the HSSTM team late last summer.
A few months into working for the magazine, I learned we would be launching a Central Arkansas magazine in the very near future and would be hiring an editor.
The first person who came to mind was Nate.
With 11 years of journalism under his byline, Nate’s been in the business long enough to understand how to attack stories and manage people, yet still young enough to exude the energy it takes to get it done on a daily basis.
My first call to Nate was met with skepticism. After all, he had never seen a copy of HSSTM and was secure in his current job. I gave him a few links to our sister pubs to check out and told him I’d check back with him after he had a chance to check us out.
That second call went much smoother.
“The quality of the publication in all the franchises got me hooked,” Olson said. “Then I got to meet everybody involved, and I was really impressed with the company as a whole. Plus, the concept of covering every high school sport and getting back to community journalism was intriguing because that’s what I really enjoy.”
Even though the Central Arkansas magazine won’t launch until this summer, we brought Nate on board to help with our statewide football preview this spring. His hustle gathering photos and chasing down head coaches already has been huge as our deadlines approach on the preview, which will be available late next month.
In this month’s Western Arkansas issue, we welcome Nate aboard with his first column, and it’s a dandy on the hot-button topic of football coaches’ salaries.
Be sure to check out Nate’s clever lead.
It sure got my attention.
