Bo: You are in a demanding world. How do you stay even keel?
LS: When you do have a faith and you know you are here for a bigger purpose and you realize that God is in complete control of your life, you can do that. I’m not a high and low guy I try to stay even keel because I know what is going to happen in the end.
Bo: Do you see your job as a coach to try to impact your players off the field?
LS: Absolutely, coaching is just part of it, the actual part you teach them on the field. You are trying to mold men to become real men to accept responsibility and accept their role in society and how you can try to mold that. For me I don’t walk in each day with my Bible and ask the guys if they read their Bible verses each day. I just try to live my life a certain way and would like to be an example of what I think you can be being a man of God.
Bo: How do you prepare to do that each day?
LS: We as coaches are routine guys and I have a routine I follow each day. Just like you need food to survive, I need and I think most people need, some type of spiritual food so I read every morning before I start my day. There are a lot of things you have to face each day and I think I just need to be armed with something from God each day.
Bo: Why do you think we see all these players getting arrested every day when we pick up the newspaper?
LS: Well I think it is unfortunate that is what the media chooses to report because there are a lot of other stories you can tell about guys. What I have found is there are a lot of Christian men out there that do it the right way but people don’t want to hear about guys doing it the right way because they blend in. What I have found is there are a lot of fathers that take care of their kids and a lot of husbands that love their wives and do it the right way. The majority of the NFL is that way.
Bo: Were you surprised when you and Tony Dungy got so much attention about your faith leading up to Super Bowl XLII?
LS: Yes but I have gotten so much feed back about that. What you are finding out is there are a lot of people out there with a strong faith that just wanted to hear someonesomething else say that they believed in the same thing.
