When it comes to a topnotch high school athletic career, it's already been a long and eventful run for Cassy Opitz. But it's fair to say the best may be still to come for the Eden Prairie standout cross country and track star, who still has her senior track and field season ahead. Opitz is the defending state champion in the 3200-meter run, was the Class AA state cross country champ last fall and was named the 2008-09 Gatorade Minnesota Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year in January. She has made a verbal commitment to run at the University of Minnesota this coming fall.
St. Paul, MN

We asked Cassy's father, Kevin, as well as her track coach, James Strait, to join in on the Triple Play survey this month to see who knows the ins and outs of Cassy's lifestyle best. ...
Not many high school basketball players can say they scored 1,000 points in their career. So when Minnehaha Academy guard Rachel Hansen did it prior to the midway point of her junior year, nothing else was needed to prove her credibility as one of the state's elite stars. Now add in the fact that Hansen did it after recovering from a torn ACL, a torn meniscus and partially torn LCL in her left knee, an injury she suffered last March in the state tournament quarterfinals, and her accomplishment becomes one of the most intriguing stories of the year. Hansen reached her milestone Saturday, Jan. 10 on the way to a career-high 33-point performance in a 67-48 win over Braham. Minnehaha Academy was ranked No. 5 in Class AAAA midway through January.
St. Paul, MN

We asked Rachel's dad, Ron, and coach, Josh Thurow, to participate in our Triple Play questionnaire this month to see who knows the Minnehaha star best on and off the court. ...

The star captain led one of the premier teams in the state, Holy Angels Academy, to a No. 6 ranking midway through December. The Eagan girls hockey team finished last year's season with a trip to state and a 20-9-1 record. Much of the success can be contributed to blueliner Lisa Berreman who chalked up 19 goals and 27 assists last season and will be back to lead the squad this year.
St. Paul, MN

Joining Lisa for our Triple Play this month is her mom Ruth and Wildcat assistant coach Jeff Kolehmainen. See who's answers align closest with Eagan's senior captain. ...
Finishing the season ranked No. 2 in the Class A poll can't hurt the confidence of Breck School senior Brittney Faber as she decides where she wants to play tennis next year. The Mustangs' No. 1 player finished second in the 2006 Class A state tournament and went undefeated this year in regular season matches.
St. Paul, MN

We asked both of Brittney's parents to join in on the Triple Play action this month to see who could come closest to their daughter's responses. ...
Mahtomedi's senior running back Stephen Johnson led the metro area with 2,134 yards rushing last year and hopes to give his team a different outcome in the Class AAAA Prep Bowl this season. After shaking off the heart-breaking loss to Totino-Grace in the final game of 2007, Johnson started off strong with five touchdowns and 299 yards in the first two games this season.
St. Paul, MN

We caught up with Johnson to learn a little more about the man behind the mask and asked his mom RaeAnne and coach Dave Muetzel to join in the fun. Which one knows the All-State running back best? ...

The Mahtomedi girls lacrosse team was part of the inaugural State Tournament last year and hope to be back again this season. They will look to senior Sara Stahnke and her co-captains Ali Chi and Mel Sauer to lead them against the West Metro powerhouses.
